When I first got Brodie the situation was---novice dog owner, experienced dog.
One night I had come in from the firepit with Brodie at about midnight, unclipped the leash, then turned around to close the doorwall. Before I could move he shot out through the opening and chased a deer off into the darkness. Not a single bark. Woods across the street where the deer live.
No use chasing so I walked up the middle of the street belting out the recall "BRODIE COME!"
After a few minutes and from about a block away he came flying back toward me. I clipped on the leash, gave him an attaboy and headed home for a cold one. My heartrate was about 300 when I saw that dog running back toward me.

"He finally slowed down to a trot and I got close to him several times, but he wouldn't let me get close enough to grab him. Long story short, I finally herded back into our yard and while he was busy sniffing, ran upstairs and got a bowl of food."

I think he thought he had a new game. <grin> If at all possible in a situation like this, get him looking at you, jump up and down like a crazy woman and take off running the other way whooping and hollering......
Its not that you can't ever use your recall, its just that you should avoid using it if you think the dog is not going to comply. For example if I'm hiking with my dog and she just wanders down off of the trail I know my recall will work just fine. If she buddies up with another dog and they take off chasing an animal it might not work.
That's why its my job to make sure situation b dosent happen.
Its about knowing the dog and where you are in your training.
