Personally, I think if you are in a foreign country, and you aren't going to be there for ages, feeding a commercial bagged dog food is rational. Are they ideal? Of course not. But you want to be able to concentrate on your work - the reason you are there. A commercial diet will probably have a predictable stool, take one thing off your mind. The dog may be a little hyper from all the carbs, but it shouldn't become ill -- it might become ill eating different bacteria in a raw diet, just as you might get diarrhea from the water. Just because the bacteria are different from home.
For me, in a foreign place, I'd feed commercial, or I'd cook the food. I am not a nutritionist, but that's what makes sense to me.

Good points, Betty.
I'm thinking that maybe there are better choices than Purina ... is there any selection at all?

There is one brand I do remember there being but I don't remember what it was called. It was more expensive than Beniful. Iams does not exist and Zuki HATES it anyway. Purina does so many foods... Most of what is down there is by Purina but I think there must be another company... Unless it was just another "different bag"tricks .I have the same problem in Mexico and we are going to be leaving next week.

I have two hedgehogs, and a large portion of their diet is dry cat food. All of the good kibbles (anything grain free) has WAY too much protein for a hedgie. But I refuse to buy the lowest quality. So I feed them Innova Herring or whatever dry cat food. Do you think you could find that there since they're owned by P&G? Also, if all else fails, what about ordering online?

Another "emergency" food I sometimes give ( I am not a nutritionist AT ALL and my dogs have stomachs of iron) is human canned corned beef hash. My dogs love it, it smells like the old canned kennel ration (my husband likes it too, fried with an egg...with toast and ketchup....
it's really my emergency food for husband)

Except for the huge amounts of salt, and in some kinds of hash, also nitrites, I think that hash (basically meat and some potato) is a completely acceptable and useful food for an emergency. (Canned hash doesn't have as much onion as homemade, but of course it's good to keep in mind that the allium family, and onions in particular, is toxic to dogs in large amounts.)
It couldn't be long-term without calcium supplementation, but that and "chunky" style meat-and-vegetable soups are in my earthquake kit. I'm a vegetarian, but for many people, and certainly for me too if I needed it, those soups supply meat, at least a little produce, and water, all edible without refrigeration before opening and no with heating necessary.
I have to credit Will for the chunky-canned-soup idea from a long-ago emergency-kit thread (just after Katrina). There are very few supermarket foods that fill the bill like that for both us and our dogs for emergency situations.

"emergency" though would not be for some months... It takes months for any mail to get to Guatemala not to mention you might not even get it after all the trouble. I am going to take what I can but I will run out.

If what you can take is limited more as to weight than as to bulk, and if the water supply will be safe, then I'd probably consider getting the dog accustomed to THK before leaving, and packing that.
It's comparatively very lightweight.

No, we are limited on both bulk and weight... and we are going to be down there for 6-24 months, really hard to plan for.
