Tam...
Don't forget that you are going to have to essentially "train" your children how to interact properly with the dog.
Training the dog is only half the battle, you need to ensure that your kids follow some rules regarding her also.
For now i would limit the time she (she dog) is alone with them.
It would only take one time for rules to not be followed and you would be back at square one with the dog.
Prey drive is really not something that you can train OUT of her.
It is something you have to live and deal with on a daily basis.
All interaction (for now, im not saying forever) between her and the kids should be monitored and also while she is on a long line.
I know it's not practical, but in order for it to work, it's something that should be done.
Thanks.
The kids are constantly being trained. She is improving.
Funny thing. Her previous owners told me that she wouldn't be in heat for another few months. So when she came into heat, I SOOOO wasn't prepared. My whole family had the flu including one with pneumonia. I had no time for her to be in heat so I kept her in our breezeway which is about 30ft long and 10ft wide. I had 2 other females in the past but never one that bled as much as Eva does which meant she stayed in the breezeway a lot in order to keep my house clean while I tended to my sick children.
Well that darned dog saw one flaw in that breezeway and took advantage of it. We had one busted out window which was covered in plastic and she ripped right through it. We never understood how she was getting out because it wasn't obvious. Until one day when I caught her jumping over 3ft of toys and through the window.
I don't think she is pregnant ... but even still ... she blew my mind!!! LOL!

If I'm reading this correctly, you knew she could get out of the breezeway and put her out there any way - while she was in heat?

You can also buy canine diapers for dogs in heat. I use to use them when I had carpeting. Now with laminate and tile I just walk around with a spray bottle in one hand and a mop in the other.
Even the most mellow dog will become an escape artist when it comes to finding some love.
When she got out, did she manage to get off of your property?
Yes, the neighbors would bring her back. I thought someone in the family wasn't securing the door properly. Needless to say, I had some apologizing to do with a few of my children. /

Does your girl have a crate?
That is something I was planning to do in May (when her previous owners told me she was due). But we had such a serious situation with so many illnesses that I didn't have the time or energy.
