The first year I started plants in my basement my oldest, now 39 yr old daughter was about 4-5 yrs old
I had 8-10 flats of all sorts of plants and I was super proud when they started germinating.
I came home from work one afternoon and my daughter greeted me at the door with
"Daddy, I helped you weed your garden".
Yep! Every last flat was "weeded" of anything green. She "did" pack all the "weeds' in a nice pile though.
We laugh about it ......now. All I could do back then was swallow my stomach back out of my throat and say "thank you sweetheart".
many, most important is the water holding capacity of soil is helped by the shade,(less water needed, more even growth)
a great secondary benifit is some weed control,
and for a good bonous it's a soil admendment when it is worked in after harvest
Really not sure what kind, Dave. I *think* alfalfa, but don't hold me to it.
Cheryl, what Dave said on the benefits.
How do you like those supports, Cheryl? I wanted something that would be pretty tall, and those fit the bill with their adjustability.
Do you have any trouble with them when plants get real tall? I was wondering if I would need to reinforce them with wooden stakes driven deep into the ground for extra support.
My tomatoes tend to flop over on the bars. Best for determinate varieties or maybe
well pruned indeterminate. The middle bar needs to be placed as close as possible to the stem and tie the branches to the cross bars as the plant grows. I am still experimenting with growing tomatoes. I may use them for pepper supports this year
