That's really good to hear about the little dogs doing so well in obedience and agility, I've NEVER seen it but it's interesting to know that after everything you hear about them that they are able to do this stuff! Thanks everyone for your replies!

I guarantee that we have not taught Jethro to guard the house and property (he's a little hazy on the survey lines). I don't know that he would bite, though, when push came to shove. He seems to be a circling, barking type. Also, we didn't teach him to do that, either. He doesn't seem to have an inordinate amount of prey drive (mediocre fetch, ball play, etc.), but he definitely has a few dogs in the neighbourhood that he 'hates', not to mention the coyotes. He's willing to leave the cats and squirrels well enough alone, if I tell him to.
He seems to have high puzzle drive - he loves to figure things out (especially treat toys), and high sniff drive, he seems to detect scents through walls. These are all traits he came with, our handling task seems to be figuring out how to shape them into socially appropriate behaviour.
If I may carry my analogy a bit farther Brad.
Most of us get delivered more than what we know what to do with. Hmm, what I mean is that almost any one dog comes with more material than most can take advantage of or even visualize what can be done with the available materials.
For instance, I may build a perfectly acceptable house with a pile of timber, meanwhile another with more imagination and exactly the same pile of timber builds a palace to be envied.
Unless one is thinking about something specialized, it's usually not that the materials that are lacking, it's us.
If my dog isn't learning, I'm doing something wrong.
Randy
My personal experience has been that any individual dog, or breed of dog, that has ever been refered to as being "crazy", probably has drive that could be channeled into something constructive. Even if its just basic obedience and fetch.
I am a good of example of what Randy is talking about. Never mind visualizing what I could do with the materials....I had to figure out what the materials actually were first.
I know Thor has a lot of untapped ability and that is my fault. His mother was still driving cattle at his age so I figure I have time to uncover some of that raw material I overlooked. What we have going for us now is an ability to read one another that only comes from years of companionship.
