That was a poor assesment by me. I could teach my dog far more than I have.
In your situation, I'd recommend getting a a couple of the Michael Ellis DVDs ("Marker Training" and the "Power of Training with Food" at least) also be looking to train that Aussie as much as you can. Nothing like hands on experience for learning how to handle and train. Even if you do go on to get a sport dog, you'll build your training experience which will certainly help with the next one!!
Beautiful dogs at rescue. Very sad Unfortunately, we have had terrible experiences trying to adopt. We have attempted through 4 different agencies ranging from local humane society to breed specific rescue. Each time we ended up with frustrating results with dogs that were "great with children" advertised but guarded everything, or terrible dog agression issues. Over $1000 later and almost having to take our middle child to therapy S we finally found a breeder return via our groomer that fit perfect. He had his issues; mainly teaching him that kids were not for herding, chasing or grabbing off of swings, but now he is amazing. I think that is the closest I can come to adopting after what we went through.
All past rescue experiences aside- if you're really interested in the breed, I encourage you to contact Christie. She does an AMAZING job of pairing dogs to families, and is totally upfront and honest. If she personally can't vouch for a dogs personality and temperament then her excellent fosters can. I used to manage a rescue- I know the in's and out's of working with that number of dogs, and she's the best.
If you think you're ready to add to your family, and can provide the structure (and work!) that a DS needs, give her a call/email. She's great. Can't say enough about her... it's just not a 'normal' rescue.
Try not to let past experienced jade you! Sometimes adopting an adult dog, who's personality is fully developed is a better bet then trying to get a puppy to fit your desires.
I will think on it for sure Kelly! I'm not one to make a quick decision on adding family members of the furry sort, so I will start with the research. I will also start writing in my "adoption notebook" I started when working with other rescues and add in some more questions from past experience. I'll try really hard not to judge all rescue groups by my poor experiences. (regardless of how I feel about the actual organizations, I still contribute locally on a regular basis; as the animals get the short end when they are surrendered or picked up by AC)
