Are those also known at guinea pigs?
tribbles, guinea pigs, cavies, cavy. Happily they are made of meat, fairly inexpensive, and readily available.

Oh yes, I raised white crested for show years ago. The most I ever had was about 150. If I raised them again, it'd be different in how I'd handle my excess stock. Honestly I might even eat them myself, they taste surprisingly good.

How quickly do they mature? We looked into raising rabbits but have not jumped into that yet, although have not ruled it out. Although the way prices are going in the grocery stores, I might look into that again.

They're sexually mature at 2-3 months for girls, 2-3 weeks for boys, full size at 6 months which is about 2- 2.5lbs. They're a surprisingly hands off animal which is why I like them as a protein supply compared to other options and they are excellent at taking care of the waste produce in the house.

Sounds like a very complicated situation...hope you are able to get to the bottom of it soon.
I just wanted to add that I recently started feeding lamb hearts in my rotation. They are very reasonably priced at about 1.60/lb.
Just thinking that you might want to keep the elimination diet limited so that you still have some novel proteins left in the bag, so to speak...especially if this turns out not to be the issue but another arises later!
Oma's has some novel proteins and a few distributors in VA:

Interesting! Where do you find these?

I get them through a company called My Pet Carnivore. Unfortunately, they don't deliver down in VA...I know shipping raw is a PITA. But it might be worth seeing if you can find a local source. They have been a real hit with my dogs and I have to admit I do love the look on my hubby's face when he finds me in the kitchen surrounded by lamb hearts, cutting them into pieces lol.

Awwwww, crap. I'm sorry to hear that Barbara. That stinks.
I know you've been to a specialist, but in my experience (vet tech) mites can be REALLY hard to nail down... ?... I wish I had better ideas for you, but Connie, Joyce, Michael, and Aaron are already here. I'll shut up now.
Kelly, I honestly thought (after initial denial) that we were dealing with mites, based on the tattered ears and face rubbing. We've done two courses of Revolution and the sulphur dips - does anything else come to mind from your experience??
After just reading on another post where Dr. Betty mentioned Ivermectin, I wonder if it would be worth trying on just Falcon. We've been treating both dogs "just in case" it was scabies, but stayed away from the Ivermectin due to the fact that our mixed breed dog has white feet. The vet cautioned that dogs with any bording heritage can not take the medication, and herding dogs often have white feet.
IF we try this on just Falcon and it works - we would know it IS scabies, correct? If he was still itchy - would it indicate it definitely NOT scabies? In other words, how effective/definitive is the Ivermectin?

You would get attached to the guinea pigs, Barbara. Their gestation period is
60 days or so, I think, and the "sow" only has a litter of 2 or 3, right Melissa? Plus the little ones are ridiculously cute.
Was Falcon better after his last miticide Rx? How long did itch free time last? Or has he been on prednisone off and on?
