Ah, jsut searched this site for it and found it. Yes, i am using marker training, im using the same obediance training that i used on my SLTPD shepards. same words, phrases, commands with german "tell" words markers as you call them, to let them know what i expect and if they have or have no complied. seems weird for pugs but its been working since the late 70's so i figured why knock it

You should try treating those little things in a vet clinic! With the very owner that taught it to be that way standing there. Oh, joy unbounded
I'd probably kill myself.
And not go alone.
People & their stories about why their dogs were such little nasty things (or nearly dead) had a lot to do with it...
I used to think those little dog-things were worthless 'til I met 'Sir'... a UDX teacup poodle. They put him through his paces in the clinic & rocked my little world... I don't recall the dog's actual name, he just had such great presence we all called him 'Sir'.
And I think the rigid lead was for those compulsive bouncers... especially if your back is not in such good shape, in combo w/the usual OB training. That's where I saw it, in an old AKC-style OB training book, along with a long back scratcher to help position the dog's rear end if it was prone to taking a bad position. Seemed much better than constantly bending over the dog.

You know I mean clicker training, right?
I don't think we mean the same thing. Marker training wasn't really commonly used with dogs in the 70s or 80s .....
Not generated from German PPD training .... more generated from ocean-mammal training.

its about using sounds, words as good or bad so they associate doing right and wrong in the instant that they do it? i dont like clickers cause hen you ALLWAYS have to have one and every one makes a slight different sound but the words they know even if the voice is different, we use "goed zo" for positive "fout" for negative "gaat" for barking and "ok" when its clear to cross the street or to continue any time weve stopped. .. is this what you mean?

I think she might be referring to the terms used. And honestly, a version of marker training has always been used, just not as systematized as recently. But hollering 'Yes!' when the dog got it is a kind of marker training.
It's been the same w/horses... Monty Roberts didn't invent horse whispering, he just popularized it. But I grew up w/an old hand that taught me if my horse didn't do what I wanted it to, it was 'cause my cues weren't clear, etc. An old hackamore man.

Bit of confusion here... the command is different from the mark.
Command: sit
the dog sits.
Mark the correct behavior: Yes! or click or clap
Deliver the reward.
So the terms you use to tell your dog what you want it to do are the commands, & you let the dog know it got it correct w/the Mark.
