Oh come on, Todd. Even my submissive Labrador knows the couch is more comfortable than the floor. Are you telling me that every time he gets on the couch, it's to tell me that he's the boss? I don't think so. Now, I'm not saying that's not what's going on with THIS dog. I was just presenting another point of view. Either way, I think we're all in agreement that the dog needs to know who the leader is, that it is not him, and that there are rules that he will have to live by. HOW that is done can be debated til the cows come home.
I don't think Todd was only saying that, but with a dominant dog, yes, of course, get him off the furniture.
I have a truly submissive GSD, when "new to me" furniture arrived it took her about 3 months and some coaxing to get her up on the couch. She would not have dared to prior. One can't get on furniture, the 2 others are cocky buggers and think all stuff in the house is theirs, so just me, and not a trainer of course, I think it comes into play in various ways.
Amy, I agree that the dog should not be allowed on the couch, it makes him think he is the boss. I suggest that you get the Leerburg video, basic dog obedience and start over with this before it is too late. best of luck
Amy,
There's a lot of good advice above, at this point not much to add on. Not sure if it was already mentioned but I do have one thing to say regarding the pinch collar. Because of the large forehead of a boxer, the only way to properly fit it on him would be to clip it around his neck and not slip it over his head, if you are or can do this then it is too loose and it will never fit in the proper position.
I had boxers for 15 years and know how stubborn they can be.....good luck and don't give up.
