What a hard thing to plan for, but kudos to you for taking the time to do it best for your boy before the time is upon you.
I think it is dependent on the couple as I was in denial that my childhood dog needed help over the bridge. My family knew but could not do it. My husband whom I had only been dating for 2 months took the lead. He talked us all through it. Though my mom was convinced that we had hidden Brandy at his farm for months, she too finally accepted that our girl was gone. He was there holding my hand as we put her down and has always been the level head about our animals. The one time I refused to listen, I ended up with an amazing old mare down in a blizzard and noone to help her for hours. I'll never blow off his advice on "the time" again after that one. I think with my heart too much, he thinks with his brain and when I am often delusional about these things, he is generally right.
I do hope that Betty L is right though and he still sees that younger version of me instead of the "mom" look I've been sporting for the last few years!

I have waited a little too long in the past and I will never forget that my dog suffered needlessly because of that.
I've regretted that with all my heart. I have never regretted stepping up and helping the dog to cross with dignity and peace, despite my own pain.
A condolence note from our vet one time summed it up pretty well for me: "Connie, you have always made the right decisions for Luna's care and comfort, and today was no exception."
There are threads here about "a perfect day" (giving your dog a wonderful day with you as well as supplying wonderful memories to the humans who must stay behind when the dog goes to the Bridge).
Part of the satisfaction of having helped a beloved being to lead a fulfilled and happy life has included, for me, making that heart-wrenching decision when necessary because of a failing body taking away quality of life.
I'm so sorry for your loss Betty. My heart goes out to you and your family. I'm sure you made the right decision, and that he's in a better place thanks to your ability to do the right thing and make the hard decision.
My thoughts and prayers are with you always. I wish I was there to give you a hug and a shoulder.
If you need anything within my power, you only need to ask.
