If an large framed 12 yr old dog looses 25 lbs and has a change in bowel habits I'm thinking something other than parasites or diet related illness. While parasites/giardia/salmonella are easy to rule out with tests or therapy, they wouldn't be tops on my list of differentials in a dog of this age.
I think a brief exam by a veterinarian with some minimal bloodwork and someone competent to palpate her abdomen would be in order.
I haven't been on in quite a while, but wanted to update. My younger gsd Sonya is back up to 84.6 lbs. We switched both dogs back to Orijen and she gained about 5 lbs during that time. She then proceeded to get a major skin staph infection, which may have been a symptom of something else going on so she was put on steroids, allergy meds and antibiotics (over a month on antibiotics). We aren't quite sure if all this is related to the weight loss, we were mainly worried about possible cancers if it didn't work. After the meds she then put on the other 10 lbs. She is now back to her normal crazy self and both dogs have normal stools.
