I read about the tofu in canned dog food in an article maybe a couple of years ago-I don't remember what publication it was in, probably not a dog mag.
I was think more of the "guaranteed analysis" list on the bag, not so much the ingrediants, it breaks down how much of what is in the food and other than protein, moisture, etc, have noticed not all foods list their added supps proportions, as well as how many calories... I've noticed more seem to be doing it, but not all.
There are two reasons why Ambi is on a joint supp. at 2 years. I've talked to orthopedic surgeons (human), and a couple of equine vets about this. My first reason for doing it is basically because as a very active dog (super active) I believe in the normal course of activity that every time she runs or jumps hard there is a possibility of her developing little micro injuries to her joints, these aren't severe enough at this point in time to cause a lameness or obvious injury but could eventually lead to the development of OA or PTA later in life, why not work at trying to lessen any damage now. All of my young horses also go on joint supps as soon as they are backed, my reasoning for this is anecdotal but I've had no non injury related lameness in my animals regardless of age. She also has occasional stiffness in a hind leg (my vet feels is related to her lyme disease), the supp helps her.
My animals are not "like" family, they ARE family. |

She gets the NB canned, it certaintly looks different than the cheaper brands-She was getting what was supposed to be a very high quality canned that i guess was too rich for her, her GI system sent it out almost as fast as it went in.

I was talking to my niece on the phone last week, and she suddenly went "oof" (or something like that) and then started laughing.
She said "Boy, I'm lucky that parking meter I just walked right into wasn't a pole!"
Was it kinda like that?

oh, and Ambers skin issues continue... I had to reschedule the derm appt and now she has had an abcess and has a lump on her shoulder (its definitely in the skin) so I hope we can find out the cause of these soon. My horse managed to cut her eyelid from the inside out so I guess everyone gets a vet visit for xmas.

.... I was think more of the "guaranteed analysis" list on the bag, not so much the ingrediants, it breaks down how much of what is in the food and other than protein, moisture, etc, ....
The guaranteed analysis includes any plant protein, including gluten (like the gluten from China that triggered all the illnesses, deaths, and recalls in 2006-2007), and plant protein is far less accessible/digestible to the dog.
Here's why the ingredient list is also important: The top four ingredients (maybe five or six if it's a lower-quality food containing grain fractions) will give you a strong idea of whether the food is grain-based or has more than a minimal (or even modest) amount of meat.
Of course, corn in top place means that only one ingredient has to be read to pass that food by.
But I'm also concerned even when the top ingredient is a named meat, if it's followed by 4 grain fractions.
Also, here is a discussion of meat versus meat meal:

I'm really glad you were able to schedule a derm vet appointment.
