I watched one of our trainers try to fix a good example of a dog having read the owners body language. The guy has a Cane Corso about 7 or 8 months old. While teaching the down from a sit, for some reason he kept stepping away from the dog, so now any time he steps back the dog instantly downs.

John. All I can say to that is if I call my dogs over & ask them if they are 'ready' they both start offering behaviors ie: speaking, sitting, high five, downing,crawling...etc, etc etc. This offering of behaviors comes form marker training.
Don't know if that helps answer your question. I guess for my dogs I could use the word READY & they would offer a number of random 'tricks'.
Kory...that is exactly how it begins..their anticipating what you will ask next. Seeing my female start to do that is exactly what made me start to do the silly stuff that I do & Bob does, with the dogs to discourage their anticipating or keying off of body language.
"Bob, I'm laughing at your post because I do the exact same thing. I have had people ask me why I jump over & around my dogs when they are laying down on the field. They must think I'm a complete fool. I'm sure that it looks pretty funny to the uneducated eye. LOL"
Anne, a total lack of pride helps me tremendously when I do that. LOL!

I read another post here once that said "If the neighbors aren't laughing and pointing, you're doing it wrong."
