Here's another storm story to share. The Rub a Dub Rescue Run was already scheduled for this weekend. There's a 5K run and you can buy rubber duckies for a chance at a prize.
Here is a letter they just shared:
My name is Kevin Oravetz and I am registered to run the 5k this weekend but will unable to attend now. My address is (was) 212 SW 148th street and unfortunately my house was totaled in the tornado on Monday. I arrived at my house about a hour after the tornado came through to see half of my roof gone, and my black Labrador retriever (Sophie) missing. I was completely devestated and spent the next 2 hours asking if anyone had seen a black lab, but all I got was "No, Sorry". At around 6:30, 3 1/2 hours after the tornado came through, I got word that there was a black lab at the end of the street. I went to the house and the owner said he had a lab in his bathroom, in the bathtub and it was barking and growling at anyone that opened the door. He told me to be careful. I opened the door and the dog growled and barked at me. I shined a light on the dogs tags to find that it was Sophie. I started calling her by name and talking to her in a way only other dog owners understand (baby voice) and she began wagging her tail and we walked home together. Sophie survived 200mph winds, managed to make her way into a bathtub 15 houses down from mine and was completely unharmed. There is not a scratch on her. With that long story being said, there are several in the area that were not as fortunate as me. Instead of refunding my race registration and the money from my 5 ducks purchased, please donate the money to help dog owners affected by the Moore Tornado that were not as fortunate as me.
Thank You and God Bless
Kevin Oravetz

Just heartbreaking..... Of the more than 200 missing horses, only a few dozen have been found alive. They have all been claimed. Of the horses that were either killed or had to be euth'ed on site, the Dept. of Ag is recording brands, tattoos, identifying marks of any kind (via photographs). They are also cataloguing ANY deceased animals recovered, so that owners can check and see if their pet has been at least recovered, even if it was found dead. My heart is just numb.

Just bearing witness is in itself pure agony.
Gathered up a bit more money and sent it. You know where it's needed. Still working on it.

I'll work another shift Sat. night. Had planned to attend a "March Against Monsanto" on Sat. afternoon, but may pass that up to get a bit of a nap.

How awful. I am terribly sad for all the human casualties caused by these tornadoes, but this being a dog board, I think it is safe to say here that my heart also aches for all of the animals that were killed, injured, or are simply lost with their fate yet unknown.
I wish I could personally thank each and every person who is helping in the rescue effort. Take care of yourself, Becky. I can only imagine the emotional and physical strain of such a task.

So very glad that you are safe, Becky!!
My co-workers in the 911 Comm Center and I watched some footage on the news one night. A news crew was interviewing a woman that had gone through the tornado.. she was bruised all over and looked like she'd been through Hell... she talked about how she was holding her little dog when it hit, and he didn't come back when she called him... During the interview, they saw movement in a pile of debris- it was a dog's nose trying to get out.
The woman that was being interviewed, struggled to lift up the debris to help her dog out. The news crew did NOTHING while she struggled - could not put the camera down for a minute to help this lady save her dog. Finally, someone helped her free the dog.
EVERY single dispatcher and police officer and deputy that was in the comm center at that time was YELLING at the TV - yelling at the news crew to help her... We also cheered when the dog was freed...
You have every right to be proud of your state, Becky. Those that have seen Hell, yet are not afraid to step back into it to help another in need.
I learned a lot about the people I work with that night as well, and I am proud to be part of their team.
Hugs to you, Becky. And for your whole state.

Ok...I can't even read these anymore..having been a dog, horse & cat owner forever...It is breaking my heart to hear these stories of loss.
The house etc...as horrible as it is to loose....is no where near as horrible as it would be to loose my animals.
Bless all the folks helping these owners find their animals or at the very least get closure, if they are lost.

This weekend there was an adoption event for all the dogs and cats that were still unclaimed from the tornado. ARC, Moore Animal Shelter and the holding facility at Cleveland County Fairgrounds all participated. There were over 100 animals for adoption. By the end of the day, ALL the animals had been placed! All animals that were found together were adopted together! There are still some tornado dogs at the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter, but from the lines of people turned away petless at this event, I'd say they will get homes pretty quickly as well!

Becky, I'd like to thank you for following up with this.
I also want to extend heartfelt thanks to you (from me and others here) for finding out where the greatest on-the-ground needs were and for undertaking to put the donations of LB members into the hands that needed them most and were using them best.
THANK YOU.
