For hard floors, you can't beat a Swiffer mop for quick. It squirts some solution in front of the mop, which has a disposable fiber pad on the head of it. It's not eat off the floor clean, but it does a passable job of picking up hair, dirt, footprints, and general grime. My standards of cleanliness aren't what you'd call "fastidious." That's something else that lost the battle with a houseful of dogs--just like the lawn turf.
I wouldn't use a steamer on a hardwood floor. It just seems to easy to warp some of the wood.
I do wood working and actually use an old steam iron to get dents out of wood. It will swell up any crushed fibers and in between the boards on a floor may not be protected as well with any sort of sealer.
I have the Swiffer pads, the wet ones and the dry ones. I vacuum, then I do the dry thing: then the wet thing.
My latest floor method actually is to use a damp rag on the Swiffer mop, the rag soaked in a weak solution of Clorox. Clorox was what we used at the vet clinic: when I am done, it smells a little like a pool, but it beats "barn smell".

I guess my next step is to find out if this one is the same weight as the Rug Doctor rentable one. Duh.
Give me till tomorrow sometime, and I'll get mine out of the closet and weigh it.
BTW, I use mine with the carpet cleaning detergent solution. I've never tried it using just the hot water.
The model I have (which I found out is indeed the one I linked to previously), weighs about 22 pounds, without water. For comparison, my Simplicity vacuum cleaner, which is an older model, very solid and hefty, weighs 20.4.
The Hoover SteamVac measures 11.5 inches wide by about 20 inches deep (including the hose attached to the back), and about 44 inches tall, so you have an idea how much closet space it will take up.
It sounds heavy, but I find it very easy to use. It's no more difficult than pushing a vacuum cleaner. As I mentioned, anyone considering getting one should read some of the reviews on Amazon for varying opinions, and definitely read the instructions before using it. I've never had the leakage problem some reviewers mention, but you do have to make sure you've got the water tanks on correctly. I see it has around 4,400 reviews, with a 4 1/2 star out of 5 average, so it seems most people are satisfied.
I spray this perfume that smells like rotting flesh. Then nobody complains about the dog smell.
I got it at hot topic many years ago. Im almost out. If i find more of it online, i will PM you.
If you go to the allergy buyers club website you can read ALOT about steamers of all kinds. I have a white wing. I love it. I can do shower doors to carpets although it is not the typical carpet shampooer.
Love the idea for cedar mulch in hard used yard areas. Will have to check that out. If you have any allergy problems with mold, be careful with getting the finely ground stuff. It can pack into a hard layer that will mold inside and that when disturbed can cause a problem if you have allergies.
