IMHO, there nothing wrong with cute tricks! Training is good.
Marker training is better!
Connie you're confusing me a bit. Don't you train tricks with markers? I love trick training and my dogs adore it. I always train them first only with an averbal help and - (when the dog does it correctly) - followed by my release marker or accompanied by my duration marker. Once the behavior is solid I introduce a verbal cue followed by the body cue as help, which I'll fade once they don't need it any more. Thats for me marker training whether it is for tricks or other exercises, which I think are actually nothing else but tricks.
Am I neglecting some detail?

I use markers for all training.
To rephrase ... Training is good, and if it's marker training it's even better.
