I try to learn something from ALL trainers, not just the DogMen. But no one should talk down a trainer whose methods are different. Besides, if anyone really read my post, I did mention Tom Rose before the DogMen. Tom Rose is another school I would consider. I do not think much of West Virginia K-9 Academy after viewing their tape. I also know of a woman who claimed to have graduated as a "master trainer" from the K-9 school in Columbus, Ohio and she could not or would not answer my questions. So I do not think much of their course either, I viewed their tape also. I have viewed Ed Frawley's tape on the Tom Rose school and was impressed by them. But people should judge for themselves about a course and not take other people's word for it. Look at the different websites for the schools, view their introductory videos, ask them questions before making a judgement.

Good for you!!!! You seem to have an attitude that all should adopt. That's what an OPEN mind is.

Wow! I missed this somehow????Before it gets closed which I assume will be very soon. I will say one thing. Having an open mind to new training methods is great. Should I use a motivational or forced retrieve is a great debate topic. Distributing misinformation which can at best be damaging is another.
To quote Kent “As far as aggitation goes, bitework, three month old malinios pups often will hang off a bite suit. You start simple. The helper aggitates the pup, then backs off. Come in, make eye with the pup, when the pup visually confronts, you back off. You praise the pup for barking out and visually confronting the helper. You have to carefully watch the eyes. You will see the point when the pup visually confronts. In the beginning, the pup may go into avoidance, which is a form of flight. If the pup turns aside, or goes into avoidance, you say nothing. Praise the pup when it barks out and and confronts the helper. There is no touch by the helper in the beginning. Let the pup win - the helper backs off. Puppy wins. You praise.”
Now if you think putting a 3 month old pup into avoidance is being open-minded. Then wow! If Ed did anything less than condemn this on his BB I would be utterly disappointed.

Hi James,
You have to be more specific when asking your question about a K-9 school. Do you want the "best-cheapest" place or The "Best" place ? I'm guessing that your relatively knew to the K-9 world. I'm very green to the civilian K-9 world (so I'm not a hypocrite) but have trained and handled in the military.
Luckily, Ed Frawley and Leerburg are here to help us all.
I have nothing but positive things to say about Leerburg. They know the business and they care about the business. While I was in the Marine Corps as an EDD handler, we would watch their videos and talk about what it must be like to actually work at Leerburg and how intense it must be. If they suggest a school you should probably listen. I asked Will Rambeau (a forum moderator) the same question you've asked. He mentioned 2 schools, Tom rose and Triple Crown Academy. I'm taking the advice and evetually attend one of them.
Don't worry about things, the more we ask the more we learn. The hard part is figuring who's full of B.S. and who's not...Leerburg is definately the latter.
Take care,
Darrin

Guys,
I am very new to gsd world. My 3 1/2 month pup looks like will need profestional training as he still tries to bite our hand and sometimes even gets angry at us.
I am in one of the suburbs of nyc. Is there any good K-9 school that you guys recommend?

Well, the training schools that we're discussing here are to train you as a trainer in different phases of dog training. They're primarily for those that want to become a professional trainer and are willing to take that step.

I have a deal for someone. Come to West Texas get a job and you can hang out with me and help train dogs (patrol, narcotics, sport). I'll teach you everything I know for free I need an apprentice.I told a kid the other day I wanted to teach him all I know about dogs... never heard back from him. Low drives no doubt.

Richard,
Sadly, there are people out there offering *expensive* apprentice programs to the unaware - but when you examine their website closely you find out that their total experience in dog training consists of attending one clicker seminar and having attained one BH.
For all this knowledge they charge around two thousand dollars ( this is in the Greater Atlanta area ).
Man...I hate scam artists, I just hate'em.

Richard,
I sure wish I lived in W. Texas. I would take you up on the offer. How far are you from El Paso? I was stationed at Holloman AFB, NM which was an hour and a half from El Paso. I loved it there. I guess I could get stationed at Dyess AFB.
