Branden, I allow threads like this because there are a lot of officers that don't have the kind of training that you talk about in your post. I have been to more Police K9 seminars than I can count and I know there are a lot of officers out there that need good information.
I don't think that making this information to the general public changes anything - shitheads that get bit by policedogs don't come to the Leerburg dicussion board but a lot of K9 handlers do.
I also think that it does not hurt that the general public sees the kind of thinking that goes into a K9 officer's decision to use his dog. If anything it gives the public more confidence in law enforcment.
Good luck in your recovery - I hope the bad guy that shot you is resting comfortably six feet underground.
Glad to see you are on the mend. I share your concern relative to discussing tactics etc. That is why anything I've ever said in an open forum is a matter of public record. Each deployment, as you well know, is an adventure. Training to survive takes on a whole new meaning when faced with the reality of a situation. I'm often asked what it is like to be a law enforcement officer ( I think they ask me cause I'm old and wrinkled) I tell them: Police work is hours and hours of endless boredom, interupted by moments of sheer terror. Stay safe and I hope you are back on the road soon.

Brandon;
As you already know, every single thing you do as a Law Enforcement Officer is subject to endless public scrutiny. I have seen nothing discussed at anytime on this board that would threaten the safety of officers or canines, interfere with the ability of LEO's to do their jobs, or hinder proper and successful prosecution of assholes for their pursuit of unlawful activities.
While there certainly are topics and/or details which should not be discussed on public forums...here or elsewhere...policies and much of LE training are, and should be, matters which the public has access to. It is, after all, public money that pays the bills.
My personal opinion is that Law Enforcement should...to a reasonable degree...welcome this public interest in our activities. The more they understand about the how and why we do things, the less time we need to spend trying to justify budgets or re-educate juries, town councils, legislatures, or interest groups...yes, even the #%&*##*! press!
