Other than near constant hyper activity? LOL
OC disorders, fits of energy that seem to always end up with them running into something and being injured because they have more drive than brains. . .that type of thing.

A friend of mine placed a Mal in my local PD, and he is awesome! He is really the first mal I ever got to know and wow, he has given me a very positive feel for them.
I notice that there is a tremendous range in the looks of the breed. Some are longer in coat and darker in color...LOts of difference in sizes too, and build.. So I guess like the GSD, people who like MAls can have their type preference too.
The one in My town's dept. is a very short dense reddishtan coat w. a dark POWERFUL head, and he puts fear into the hearts of criminals!!
I LOVE my GSD's, but someday I really would like to have a mal too, they just really seem like a fun dog to have!
No one ever said life was supposed to be easy, life is what you make of it!! |

The wierdest thing Ive seen mals do, is a handstand next to a bush so they can poop higher than the previous dog. Almost busted a gut when I first saw that.

Here are some reasons why I like my Mal over my Shepherd:
The Mal can go back and forth from high drive to low drive, like turning on a light switch. Does not need 2 warm-up bites to get the blood flowing.
I think the Mal is a quick learner. For example my Mal had her 2 by 24 months and my shepherd finally got his 1 at 48 months.
Watch a litter of Mal pups then watch a litter of Shepherds. The mal puppies I have seen are crazy for the bite. Some 8 week old Mal pups can put adult dogs to shame.
I sometimes wonder if the mal is what the old shepherds use to be? I like the idea of a cheap blue collar working dog. Mals do have there faults, but they are so fun to work and train.

No warm up bites needed to get blood flowing in any of our dogs. One, you'd swear she was gonna kill you just because she saw you in scratch pants. Besides, most of the Mals I've seen only have one gear...OCD overdrive.

Funny though, a couple of the pups from our last litter are already indicating on coke, one is doing a SchH3 OB routine with all retrieves except the 1m hurdle, a couple of the others are at or above CD level...not bad for some "slow learning" 5mo old GSDs.

I find this to be a stretch of the truth. Going for "shock value" maybe? Sounds like you need to see a few more litters of WELL bred working line GSDs.

Mike,
I have lived with both breeds and titled from puppy-up. Both come from similar type performance breedings. It is hard to compare the breeds unless a person has done this. I still love the Shepherds it is just getting harder to find a good one, and I don't have the time to go thru and wash out 4 or 5 to get what I am looking for. Also the prices on a average working Shepherd are way out of line. Especially the pups from unproven parents. I don't think the Shepherd is a slow learner, just the Mals tend to mature faster and can progress at a quicker rate.
I would like to see your 5 month old pup do his 3 routine, that is great! Shock value?
