The working mali genepool is split between FCI and non-FCI registered populations. There are (according to this breeder) a lot of non-FCI dogs getting into the FCI genepool, and breeders just falsify the pedigrees... making it look like there is more linebreeding going on then there really is. This breeder feels that DNA testing of the FCI malinois will be the death of that genepool as a working breed.
I agree on all points, but... I am also aware of many litters with fairly high amounts of linebreeding, that I "know" actually happened.. These are un-papered dogs to begine with, so there is no pedigree hokey-pokey going on.. These dogs seem to express very high working ability.. now, as for the long term.. I am un-sure what ramifications will crop up..

I wonder if this has anything to do with the massive amount of inbreeding that took place to "set type" in the GSD breed in the early years of the breed? Possibly the accumulated inbreeding baggage in the working GSD genepool makes it less tolerant of additional inbreeding/linebreeding today.

That is pretty much where I was headed, but was curious if others had the same theory on it... I would guess that the desire to set the physical traits, as well as the mental traits on the GSD would cause the early linebreedings to be a little more severe, ie. preferring a certain coat color over another... where as the Malinois are pretty much, take what you get "appearance wise"
