Oh yeah, and I forgot... Even if a vari kennel has all its bolts and a good door a dog can get out if they have figured out how to. Lots of times escape artist dogs figure out that if they push hard enough up with their noses near one of the corners they can pop the door... I suspect that is what happened here...

(Off topic - This is the kind of wire crate my monster ate the arms off my couch while he was in it - both couches - somehow he hopped himself across the room while in the crate.)
The airlines don't have crates you can rent... You have to provide your own and it has to accomodate their specifications or else your dog doesn't fly...
You can not lock the vari kennel... I have heard many reasons why, but I am not sure how true any of them are so I won't repeat them.
Thanks for explaining that - I was wondering how it works - and I guess I'll continue to wonder on the locks. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
well, as I said before I am not exactly the authority on why, but if you and your pet were to be seperated and the dog was in transit longer than their regulated amount of time for last time dog was fed or offered water I suppose they are supposed to do it. I feel quite doubtful it would get done. I try to avoid connecting flights if at all possible with a dog. That is when you will get seperated from your luggage or your dog. Add to that the fact that more than one dog has been lost on a runway when being moved from plane to plane...
4 out of 5 years my luggage has been lost coming back from NC at christmas....
I don't know if the door was how that dog escaped. If it did that to the wall you think it wouldn't chew the plastic?
I have seen dogs take the wire sides out of a vari kennel. My old male Dobe did it in an afternoon. Only way to keep him in chain link was to not leave him there to begin with...

ABC Eyewitness News ran a story tonight on the breed ban!
AA had no comment, but they had the Pres. of the AKC on saying that the airline should not punish breeds, but rather deal w/ individuals whose dogs are aggressive. They also interviewed dog owners at NYC dog parks, so anyway, there is obviously alot of peolple upset w/ the ban!
No one ever said life was supposed to be easy, life is what you make of it!!
