Yes, I'll admit I caved in when I allowed him on the bed  but he's very obedient and all his little priveledges (even sleeping on the leather furniture) come with the understanding that he OBEYS and anyone can say "OFF" the furniture whenever they want. When we visited nursing homes he always got up onto the beds too.
He also doesn't shed (very little) so to me that is also a bonus for letting him rest where he wants.
I do have a blanket on the bed and his favourite chair because the oil in his coat can discolour the duvet.
I like having him on the bed and I believe it helped forge our relationship into the strong bond it is now.

Dog's and beds do nto mix too well... first my dog is too dam big to fit on the bed with me, and second I would hate to be be waken up with dog hair in my nose and him licking me to get up, breathing all over me and crap.. YUK!
My dog sleeps next to the bed where all good lower ranked members would sleep, he likes the small space between the bed and wall... plus you can't see him at all until it's too late and your lunch.

A bed is never too small for me and the dog. I've slept on my sister's couch with me balled up on one end and him on the other, and even slept in a little twin bed (that was tricky!) laying like spoons all nite. Heaven! And as for dog hair, I consider it a staple in my diet!

Staple. . .that was funny.
See that dog hair thing is going to have an upside here pretty quick. As soon as some smarty finds out how to clone dogs from dog hair. I have no doubt that I'll be able to go back to old Bernd Lierberg's house and find some samples. . .I don't care if it doesn't happen for 25 more years. . .the hair will BE THERE.

Auster can sleep on the bed if she wants, but most of the time she doesn't. She will sleep on the bed while I am gone, but when I come home she will sleep on the couch. She will sleep on the foot of the bed if I ask her, but the only time that she enjoys getting right up close is 6:30am (she lays on my chest and licks my face to wake me up).
If I close the bedroom door she will jump up and scratch it so it is just easier to deal with her. I should train her to stay off of the door, etc. I know, but I enjoy having her in the room so I really don't mind.
*If you are doing a poll of working dogs Auster doesn't count. She's just an oversized dust bunny .

Princelydeeds, you must have seen my male working, he loves to retreive bad guys back to me.
For some reason he still won't retreive birds or ducks.

As a kid, my Schipperke slept on my pillow, my Boxer on my feet. Later, married, our African dog slept on our bed. Then, our series of Huskies - slept where they liked. Now, we have a three and a half month Malinois. We were trying to do things right.... Crating - never even in bedroom - trying to make sure she does all the right things - a bit like trying to bring a baby up by the book. And now - what do I read!! Ha! Relief!!

I have three rotts, all have full bedroom priveleges. The oldest girl usually takes the bottom of the bed, my younger girl gets up closer to the pillow. The boy sleeps on the floor, right next to the bed. They usually don't stay the night, as soon as they get too hot, they jump down. If I hear panting, I ask them to jump down, now they do it on their own,,,,,no panting in my bed!!!! I put a large faux fur throw on top of the bed, and that is their spot. That comes off the bed twice a week for washing, hair is not a problem. They are kept very well combed and clean. My back yard is grass, no dirt to worry about. Susan
