I don't usually say too much...usually just read, but I have to add something to this conversation. I started showing in AKC obedience (I hate to admit how long its been) forty years ago! I got pretty burned out because the dogs really didn't like it. I had dogs hide when they heard the sound of a choke collar. When I visted the Schutzhund club here about 12 years ago, I saw dogs that obviously really liked training! It was play for them and the handlers were having a good time too. The challenge of the three aspects of the sport and the idea of it being a proving ground for breeding stock sold me on the idea. I still have my first GSD, he's 12, and though he didn't make it in Schutzhund, he's scared of gunfire, it helped me realize I should not breed him ever. (showlines) My current male (Leerburg) loves the sport and he's a great personal protection dog as well. He's scared off a burglar, a mugger and held a punk who was stealing parts off the cars at the business next to mine- and held him til the cops arrived. They were very proud of him (as was I). Anyhow, I think it brings out the best in great dogs and helps us find the right use/activity for the others. If you don't happen to start off with a great dog, don't be discouraged. We all make mistakes with our early dogs and learn for the future.
