Sable is genetically dominate over other colors, thats why you see so many of them in the working bloodlines where one would hope color isn't a consideration in breeding. But there are bungloads of working bi-colors, black and tans, and blacks out there....

Ok, I gotta ask....just how many equals a "bungload"? And how does that compare to a sh*tload??
John
A bungHOLE is the place you tap a keg/barrel of beer.
A bungLOAD is in reference to the huge amount of beer and froth that comes out of the old style wood kegs when you tap them.
So that is a lot. I always find that if I break things down into simple beer analogies I am able to make more sense of them.
Might have something to do with the fact that I like to spend the majority of my evenings in a beautiful microbrew haze.
Sourced from various tomes on genetics:
White is a recessive gene, but it is a "masking" gene, a recessive gene in an independent location from the location of black or dilute gene. A white dog can genetically be a sable; you just can't see the color, unlike the black, who, if he carried any other color, wouldn't show black.
The white chest patch is not necessarily a result of a white dog in the pedigree, unless the white dog is also contributing a "spotting" gene...of which there are two varieties:
Common Dominant, and Irish Spotting.
The Common Dominant is frequently found in gsd's and produces white spots on tip of the tail, chest, and toes.
The Irish Spotting (considered recessive) is seen infrequently; it causes white spotting to appear on the muzzle, forehead, chest, belly, feet, and tail tip. (Harry Potter probably carries that gene)
