Think of it this way. A minor is not old enough to sign a legal waiver that they accept the risks associated with training a dog in protection, and that they would waive the right to sue a club, or organization if they were bitten.
25 here... soon to be 26 the fifth day of December. Just recently got into Schutzhund and wish I would have known more about it when I was 18. Wish I would have had a chance to train and travel etc. before I had my two children. But better now than never!
I think it is important to allow the opportunity for youths to take part in working dog sports and training.
It's going to depend on the kid, the level of help and close supervision, and the training scenarios.
I have to say that I was yelling "FASS!!" at about 13 years old behind a beautiful working DDR dog named Brego.
Shortly thereafter I discovered what girls were good for and it wasn't till 17 that I bothered to try to train a dog again. Pops wasn't pleased with that, but he was old as dirt and it had been decades since he had suffered from the "Tyrany of the Hunt".
Chastity, I am with you there, now 25, and I wish I would have known how great of a sport this is back when I was 18 before my two girls. You hit the nail on the head, better now then never... Brandon
Im 29 and thought that i was young getting into the sport a year or so ago - clearly not down hill from here then
LOL LOL, Will that would be my daughters. They are now 6 and 3.....and would like to get my 6 yr old into doing OB with my 4yr old dog when she is a bit older herself.Maybe 2 more yrs. I know that my 3 yr old will be doing something with dogs, she is already telling the dogs to Platz and fuss. When you ask her what she is going to be when she gets big, she tells ya that she is going to be a dog trainer like her dad.
