The breeders of my Border terriers and my JRT kept part ownership on paper with the dogs. You can't breed, sell, etc without both names signed. Once I titled the dogs, I could have their names taken off the registration. Not for everybody, but I knew the breeders well.
I am not planning on having a litter until sometime in 2005...if all goes well.Although I mentioned limited registration...this is probably not the way to go...and to be very honest, I myself would never purchase a dog that way.Co-ownership would be a dream come true for me..if the genetics I have could be placed in proven knowledgable hands in different areas of work...in order to proof read the genetics of a particular breeding to gain knowledge of what is needed for the potentiality of future breedings...long term..I hope that made sense. Looking at the classified ads at "pups for sale"..usually makes me want to call each breeder and inquire whether it be a cross or not..registered or not..I shouldn't even look. Now its x-mas time...and the ads are long.Normally you never see a gsd pup for sale..in this area. Now I am venting...so sorry. There were two ads.."just for x-mas pups"...both were unregistered.."Beautiful blk/silver parents..on premises"........In a year..there will be more ads for unregistered beautiful blk/silver pups..The list of total ads..gets longer and longer each year..for so many breeds or crosses.I won't go on..as I have already gone far off the topic. Just one more thing..bare with me..in my area..there are fly by night obedience trainers although sparce..who charge outrageous prices...and don't know crap.If I had the time..I would offer basic free of charge.

Selling dogs on limited registration is not a requirement for being a responsible breeder. I don`t think that`s what was implied. What I read was some breeders in order to have more control of their lines and to direct their line toward that breeder`s personal goal will use limited registration as a means to their goal. It doesn`t fault the dogs sold under that LR but it stops a buyer from registering and and especially using that kennel name on a litter should that buyer break the agreement.
The only thing needed for evil to exist is for good men to stand by and do nothing!!!
Roger that sums it up well. But it always has to be measured against what is best for the breed.
If issuing limited registrations allows one's breeding operation to thrive and produce high quality dogs in a way it could not if it didn't issue limited registrations then, overall, that could be considered good for the breed. The number of breeders who actually fit that description is probably very small. For every one else, the only thing that a limited registration might do is improve your standing in social circles. I believe that if one is willing to put social standing above what is good for the breed then they cannot be considered a good breeder. As I said before, if a pup is better than the average dog then breeding it should be encouraged. Since, even the most mediocre working line dog is probably better than the top showline dogs it would be very difficult to argue that such a pup should not be bred.
