Can someone point me to some information other than hearsay about these things being detrimental? I've looked and can't find anything other than this thread.
I'll see if I can find the link later, I gotta run out in a second - they are damaging when used indoors in the same room as the dog is in - however, this is not Rashmi's case - in her situation, it's causing 3 problems... 1) it's teaching the dog not to bark, which, during the day in a reasonable amount, could be a desirable trait - the neighbors have no right to train this out of a dog, if the dog is being a nuisance and barking all night, which it doesn't sound like, then it is rashmi's responsibility to teach the dog to be quiet at night, or use a bark collar when it's time to sleep, but this doesn't seem to be the case. 2) the dog has developed a fear to go into the back yard because it isn't making a connection between the noise and the barking - I would be livid if my neighbors did something to make my dog fear my back yard. 3) It's nobody's right to train or punish someone elses dog without permission from the owner. This in itself is irritating enough.
But you are right, the sound in itself is not detrimental to a dogs hearing in any physical way except in ways that go against the instructions provided by the unit.
Sorry, if I was in a situation like that, it'd be the neighbors that'd be moving, not me.
I would *love* to see your game plan for that- in fact, if I ever run into bad neighbors, I'm calling you and Fetz

It isn't sonic devices in general that we can't find, Will (and what was that about snide comments); it's these so-called dangerous ultrasonic plug in no bark things. All the ones that *I* have found say nothing about decibel level or that they should not be used indoors. The ones *I* have found all say that they will not work through walls, doors, windows, etc. Copied from one of the websites:
"Q: Will it go through doors, walls, windows?
A: You will want to have the unit in the same area as the barking dog, as it is not designed to go though walls doors etc. You want to place the unit in an open area unobstructed by fences trees or other solid objects as these may diminish the ability of the sound to reach the dog.
Q: Will It hurt the dogs?
A: Unlike shock collars or sprays the high pitched sounds are designed not to hurt the dog but rather to annoy them when they bark -- naturally training them not to bark."
That's the information we have found, but then some of you posted about how dangerous these devices are, but can offer no proof.

To add to how ultrasound can be used as a weapon, it's strongly theorized that whales and dolphins use their melons (their fleshy foreheads) to focus their sonar into sort of an ultrasound "stun gun" to stun their prey for easier capture. Sperm whales are theorized to use it against giant squid, and there is a record of a diver coming in contact with a sperm whale calf who shot a sonar wave at the diver, sending him "flying" backwards, though unharmed.
Powerful stuff, indeed. I can post links if needed but googling up "whale sonar stun prey" in one shot does the trick
Here, I'll post this for the people that can't figure out how to use something complicated like an Internet Search Engine, like google..
( and who turns on your computers for you, by the way... )
Will, that's not called for, and none of what you posted has anything to do with the sonic bark devices. That's like linking to stories on electric chairs as proof that e-collars are bad.
Look, I just want to know the truth about these things, and I don't care to get in the middle of your tiff with Kristen.
