I don't completely soak the food. I just put some water in there because it slows the dog down. Without the water, my Golden Retreiver will eat so fast that he will literally start to choak. The Lab isn't quite as crazy.
Chuck..if you just take a few minutes more to allow the food to soak you will allow the dogs to have a healthier meal. Think of it this way.. the stomach juices will finish the soak and will blow up in the dog.
DOBE, my parents love Auster. They just love her too much. I've been stressing how they need to be easy on her stomach and not feed too much and it's been working so far. Nobody would want a foo foo shepherd with pannus that was bloat prone and hard to train anyway <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> .
According to Purdue:
"The risk of GDV was increased 4.2-fold (or 320%) in dogs that consumed dry foods containing citric acid that were also moistened prior to feeding by owners." http://www.vet.purdue.edu/epi/dietrisk.htm
"Dog breeding must always be done by a dog lover, it can not be a profession." -Max v Stephanitz
Soaking time depends on the type of kibble. The expanded types of kibble(most brands) take a little longer than
the pelletted types (National) which quickly turn into a pasty mush. If a kibble has had the fat content sprayed onto the outside of the kernels it can affect how it absorbs water. The size of the kibble pellet varies greatly between brands and complicating that, some kibble is in a crumble form (Redpaw) that is designed for mixing with meat, so it is hard to specify an optimum soak time other than to say soak until the moistened, not mushy. Soaking dog food will not cause the squirts unless it is soaked until it is soupy, spongy pap. Dogs generally prefer a moist, but not mushy texture.
