Well, TODAY at work this same trainer comes up to me and actually has the gaul to say, "I'd really like to see your dog in the class b/c I feel you're going to be mean to him."
What the heck is wrong with this lady? I couldn't respond the way I wanted to (swear words galore) so I just politely told her I've done the proper amount of research, that I'd like to train him MY way and that I put the prong collar around my leg AND neck to see how "painful" it really was.
I can't believe this woman, she thinks she knows everything. I thought maybe she was just on me, but I guess she gets on EVERYONE'S case in the store.

Antone, she sounds like a major waste of time. Most of the people who're giving you looks and comments wouldn't know a Cane Corso if it bit them on the a$$. Nevermind what methods to train them with. Don't worry so much about them. I know, easier said than done, but for real, this one sounds like a real nut. Ever ask why she works there, only having authority over wealthy housepets if she's such an expert?

....trainers for places like Petsmart are always going to be chosen by the managers to be the most PC people imaginable, and pinch collars are most decidely not PC nowadays. my service dog,Anja, was trained with one,and when i tried to work her with a nylon martingale, shortly after i got her,she acted as if she was totally confused,as if she couldn't hear what i was asking. but put the pinch back on,and she was happy as a clam, and worked perfectly. i don't always have time for confrontations,or in the mood for them,so i cheat, and have her collar covered in a black nylon sleeve, that keeps the links out of sight, but still in working order. so if you want to use a pinch, try this....

You may want to challenge her as to why PetSmart sells such "torture" devices without teaching people how to use them.
How much are PetSmart and similar stores responsible for people buying and using prong collars (and NOT teaching HOW to fit and use them properly) as well as e-collars (same situation)?
Both valuable tools in the right hands.........torture devices used improperly.
Seems to me if they are going to be PC they should either pull the stuff from their shelves or have trainers who are schooled in the appropriate usage....

Boy, this prong collar thing is an epidemic. People really do look at prong collars like a torture devices.
I have a great 7-year-old GSD/lab mix that I swear knows English. But, every once in a while she gets a little lazy. Two or three 10-minute seasons with the prong color and she is right back on track. I also have a 4-month-old GSD on which I use a prong collar for training.
Around my house my neighbors think I am a jerk, “too mean”, “too strict”, and “too worried about obedience training”. They believe that my insistence on using the prong collar during training seasons on such a cute puppy and my insistence that my dogs listen and obey me every time I speak to them is crazy. This all comes from people who allow their dogs to wander from yard to yard, are OK with giving commands multiple times, and I think that they don’t care if their dog totally ignores them.
For me, I’ll keep training my dogs my way with the prong collars. For me (and it sounds like others) they are very valuable training tools.
Imagination is more important than knowledge. |

Antone,
What does this petsmart trainer think of the Tripple Crown Collar? They sell them in the Petsmart where I live. They too work just like a prong.

....is that the solid plastic one, that has points on it? never have used one,but the points feel sharper than even a small link pinch collar, and thinner,i think. don't know if i would care to try one-we do fine with the kind we have, and as they say,'if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

I'm not sure. I didn't even know we sold those (I work in the fish dept.). I'm afraid to ask her though. Haha.
