Trevor,
I had the same problem w/my GSD. I kept giving him raw chicken wings and he kept giving me the finger <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> !
I switched to chicken backs; still got the finger.
Finally I had the supermarket grind everything up and he ate it instantly! After a couple of weeks of ground chicken parts I reintroduced chicken thighs whole and chicken backs and he ate them.
I now can give him the chicken pieces whole w/no grinding included but if I include anything else in his bowl with it (venison for example), he'll choose it over the back or thigh every time.
So he's not in love w/the whole raw chicken diet but he will eat it if that's all he's given. I think he's just a dog who adores the taste of beef (raw or cooked) but, unfortunately for him, he seems to be allergic to it.
Try the grinding. It may do the trick. Good luck.

I will add to the beef warning. I'm as guilty as they come falling into the "chicken/fish" trap in terms of variety.
That said, we noticed our Beagle getting the "itchies" (he used to get really bad hot spots on a regular basis) when we started using Natural Balance Food Rolls - Beef version cut up for tracking. After "accidentally" switching to the Turkey rolls, the "itchies" stopped. While I can't be 100% sure, I assume he's got some sensitivity to Beef - nothing else in the content jumped out at me.
The other dogs did fine with the Beef rolls for tracking. It's a real adventure figuring out how to improve the diet, one dog at a time.
I also support the suggestion of grinding. Every butcher (in my area - big metro area with more laws to live by) won't grind meat and bones together in their equipment. Smaller type "family operated" old fashioned, small butcher shops seem more open in my neck of the woods for these special requests. Keep pressing on!!

Thanks, I'll try the grinding out. Hopefully I can find someone who can do it for me.

The natural food store near me does it for me all the time. (I have them grind weight-bearing bones.) I call them when I'm on my way so I don't have to wait while they clean the grinder before and after -- which, by the way, they are happy to do for a good customer. :>
I also have them throw in the organ meat when I'm having weight-bearing bones ground. My dogs will ignore some organ meats forever, or at least until serious hunger has set in. Ground up, though -- yum (apparently).
But for a transition, ground turkey and chicken are both available everywhere, right in the meat case. No bones, true, but fine (IMO) for a transition food.
I've recommended it more than once for a dog going from kibble to fresh, as an introduction food with much less texture surprise.
I have yet to meet a dog who didn't like ground poultry.

GREAT NEWS!!! Shuggie just chommped down his first RAW chicken wing!! He's finally reconnected with his primal roots! I guess it just took him this long to realize it was something he could eat.
I was lazy tonight and didn't even try to chop it up or anything, I just put it in whole with his Honest Kitchen mix. First he took it out and put it on the kithen floor like he usually does. I checked a little later and the wing wasn't there anymore and my girlfriend yelled that he had brought it into the bedroom and left it on the carpet by my side of the bed. She rinsed it off and put it back in his bowl. A few minutes latter he had it on the living room carpet and just started crunching away! Now it looks like I've got to work on getting him to eat in the kitchen only!
What I thought I'd do now is continue with the wings for a little while with the Honest Kitchen and then start to slowly add in my own veggie mix and organ meat and eventually phase out the HK. That stuff is expensive!!

This may sound crazy but we had a dog that would bring everything onto the living room carpet to eat it. We finally solved it by getting an area rug and teaching the dog to take the food to that. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Btw, congratulations on your progress.

Aw heck, with a name like that, I'd spend hours with him trying to get him to do anything! <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Love it!! And, congratulations - it's only onward and upward from here.
As you think, so shall you be. |

.......they say my dog is arriving at 11:25 am so I hope she will be there.......
Angelique, Do you have your new girl now? <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I guess we could ask "Do you have your new girl who is hungry from the trip?" so as not to hijack. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I'm glad to say that Shuggie ate another wing this morning for breakfast, but once again he brought it into our bedroom and crunched it down on the carpet. I don't really want raw meat on the carpet in the bedroom or anywhere else in the house, but it's difficult because in the morning I'm busy getting ready for work which makes it hard to monitor his eating.

I feed mine outside or in crates; salmonella may not be a big issue to them, but I've had it once and don't need it again.
