You're in Arizona, why not use a sidearm? Everything else is simply less than the best.
If you're not confident with your pistol skill PM me. I teach people to shoot, I'm good enough at it that I prep soldiers and even some units deploying to Iraq/Afghanistan.

ok, here is an udate...
i think that this incident has made my do a little leary of other dogs now.
not once has Charlie flat out barked at another dog, unless it was in a playful sense, and they were being socialized.
yesterday and today both, while i was taking him out for potty time b4 the kennel, there was someone else walking their dog, and charlie immediately began replying the 'barking' as the other dogs approached....
the other dogs were barking first, and i am not sure that this was simply not an instinctive reaction that he is growing into (protectiveness), or simply him being more aggressive...his hair was standing up making him look like a damn hyena...lol...
and when the other dog neared (ON AS LEASH) charlie smelled of his nose, as i excahnged pleasantries with the owner....did not seem disturbed....but i was inquisitive of his 'all of a sudden' barking at an approaching dog...
never once has he simply barked at another dog, whether they were barking or not....

Hi Red,
I'm just curious. Is that the only weapon you carry with you? I ask because if a dog is large and is coming up to you and your dog(s), would your only way of protecting yourself be shooting the dog? I'm not talking about a savage, drooling, foaming at the mouth presa canario, fila, ________ (fill in the blank).
I'm talking about a dog that is big enough to worry about, acting in a way that would be worrisome but not necessarily acting so bad as to warrant its life cut short.
This is not a post wherein I have a problem with guns. Just curious how you'd handle the above scenario wherein a gun is overkill - pardon the pun.

Arizona Revised Statutes 13-3107 A person who with criminal negligence discharges a firearm within or into the limits of any municipality is guilty of a class 6 felony.
C. This section does not apply if the firearm is discharged:
9. In self-defense or defense of another person against an animal attack if a reasonable person would believe that deadly physical force against the animal is immediately necessary and reasonable under the circumstances to protect oneself or the other person.
I must admit that I cannot find the caveat that allows me to shoot to defend my dog, but, I'll swear I've seen it. I'll run it to ground if you'd like.
Yes, a sidearm is all I carry. If one draws their sidearm (or any weapon for that fact), ever, they should be dialing 9-1-1 with the other hand to report themselves as the victim of an attempted attack. That includes loosing your PPD.

I searched out this thread because a huge, overweight and agressive Cocker Spaniel charged us from across the street last night. I was very impressed by my husband's reaction. He immediately began to yell at the dog to get away and was kicking at him. Our GS (mix) is 9 mos old and we had the prong collar on her at the time. I was about 20 feet behind him with my 13 year old Lab. It happened very fast. I'm now going to purchase a baton.
Can anyone tell me the approximate standard weight of batons? I looked at the one posted on the first page of this thread but they do not list the weight. Anybody carry a baseball bat or are they too heavy?

I usually carry a home made hickory walking stick. And a pistol. This is on my own farm, though. I wouldn't carry the gun in town, but I would carry a walking stick if I had to walk my little guys in town. Absolutely.

I have a bat filled w/lead and it's the size of my forearm so much easier to carry than a standard bat. But, when I use it on a popular hiking trail near me, it does draw attention (from guys - it's always a guy that comments . ).
I use different weapons for different locations:
Bat
Mace
Knife
Whip (can't remember name of it, it's from a tack shop)
Dressage something or other (also from a tack shop)
Walking Stick
The two things from the tack shop are very, very light and easy to carry. But I wouldn't want to get stuck fighting off a Rottie with them. But they are good for my neighborhood, anywhere in my town, congested pedestrian traffic areas, etc.
If going to a park where there are a lot of morons w/off leash dogs, I take the bat or walking stick.
But no matter where I go, I always have my cell phone and knife .

Oh, me too. I am so used to carrying a knife that I forgot to
mention it. I always have a pocket knife, always, and carry a hunting knife on my gunbelt when walking my dogs on the farm.
