We just like a lot of details :-D
Ya know, that's true on a very basic level. A lot of posts are "answered" with a list of clarifying questions.....
The people replying walk all around the problem, assessing and poking at it before offering an opinion.
And that's a good thing!

Hey Jerry, I don't know if it was for the same reasons or not, but my dog rides with me in an extended cab p.u. in the space behind the drivers seat. He would go nuts when motorcycles or trucks went by, different things that if he was on a leash walking he was fine with. I just hit the brakes. Not enough to make him go flying but enough to cause him to think about his balance more then the motorcycle. It didnt take long for him to settle down and relax.

Jerry,
My first dog was very much like yours. After some hearing loss I decided to make my second dog be quiet in the car. Most times its an obedience issue. It must be stopped before it gets too bad and you end up with a monster of a problem. My second dog was told to be quiet and he listened. When I hit the gas hard or a tone alert on the radio went off and/or the light bar was activated he would go off. I don't have a problem with that because I want my dog ready for what is coming. Any other time he was ordered to be quiet.
A Lab I trained for explosives never seemed to get it. We put a bark collar on him and that took care of the problem immediately. There are a number of ways to fix the problem, some are fast and others not so fast. Some are effective, and others aren't. It all depends on the dog.
Lets address this issue and get you a solution. My off the cuff suggestion is the bark collar. If thats not an option I will be glad to float another out there. There are folks here itching to give you their ideas as well. Take what you can from the people here and see what works.

I don't know about a "screen test", (hitting the brakes), I'd be afraid of injury. It's bad enough during a pursuit. I'd probably, like Howard, use electronics. Only I'd rather not use a bark collar. I'd use the remote so I could correct him for not obeying. I just don't like the idea of indiscriminately (I don't think I spelled that correctly) having the dog shocked for barking.

As I read that, hit the brakes wasn't the best choice of words. I didnt mean leave 100' of skid marks. Just rolling along at about 4 or 5 mph. tapping the brakes enough that he would either sit or lay down just had the effect of calming him down.

David,
My problem is that we aren't allowed to use an ecollar. The only option I had, electronics-wise was a bark collar. This was used on the lab so not a big deal. I see your point ref using a bark collar on patrol dogs.
An issue I have with Roscoe is that during training he wont shut up. By the time it was his turn for an exercise he was spent. I did use the bark collar for that as it was training and not working the road. I used to cover all the windows with moving blankets but it became a pain, and the other handlers had great fun at my expense. You know how ruthless they can be.

Your post reminded me of something that happened with my pup JUST ONCE. He is tied in to the "child-seat/tie-downs" in the back of my hatch back and he has plenty of room to lay down.
Well ONE TIME, he went nuts at this guy behind us on a motorcycle. He hasn't done it since, and he has seen motorcycles before and since. I suspect that the guy must have been making faces at him or something, as my pup just went totally ANGRY BARKING at the other guy. Yet later that same day, he totally ignored motorcycles.
I think it is their personal radar sometimes. There is ONE NEIGHBOR that he will "quietly growl" at ... yet all other times he just sits quietly.
But if it was chronic, then I would feel the need for one of those anti-bark collars.
Keep us Posted!

Hi everyone
STEVE S. now thats funny your killing me. I have((touch)) my brakes it didn't work (I'm still laughing) But you don't want the dog to shut down or have an injury. There is a dog here when he hears handcuffs he goes nuts.(still laughing steve) HOWARD K. You are right about people wanting to help AND THANK YOU ALL and i know what you are saying.. And i think LANCE W. is right about how (SOME) people react and still not have helped the problem. David F. I think the (sreen test) now thats funny!! But i'm going to try my E-collar first and then a bark collar and drive up & down the street & not let him train there for a couple of weeks. How does that sound? And go train with some k9 guys in other towns. We always train here. And that could be some of the problem. LETS END THIS THREAD NOW!!! And those who want to e-mail me just let me know? And we will stay in contact and i'll let y'all know how things are going. Thank you all for your help and i'm sorry we started out a little rocky.
Take Care All

Howard, I didn't realize it was a lab, I do keep a couple of "bark collars" around just for that. Sometimes they can just drive you crazy ha ha. I know what you mean about other handlers though, they can be a cruel lot. You know dog handlers, just brimming with sympathy. ha ha.
