As with any breed, you have to look at the breeder and the bloodlines. That will determine the kind of dog you get.
There is a Mali in my agility class with me that has minimal drive. She is a WONDERFUL family pet, but is not a very good working dog. Incidentally she lives with 2 very young children.
I personally have 2 Mals. Toni has 1 speed when working... overdrive. Her littermate Caterina is much more inclined to think about what I am asking her to do. Both stop and settle down when I ask them to stop.
If the OP wants a Mal, he just needs to find a breeder that breeds the qualities that he wants, and he needs to know how to pick a puppy with the traits he wants. He needs to understand pack structure and leadership to develope a well behaved dog.
Let's help him with that, rather than the squabbling over what breed is better that I read earlier in the thread.
