My grocery store ordered them in by mistake so I got them for about $1.19 a piece. Which for a game hen is CHEAP.
I talked with Ron today and as long as I keep ordering my whole chickens from him, he will continue to "screw up" and order the hens in.
I am trying to make them last as long as I can, since they are PERFECT for puppies and small dogs......I may even just start feeding them to Little Em exclusively and only using them as a treat once a month for the big dogs.

Ohhhh..... OK. I was seeing them for over $4 each! Now I know to hint around at the store that I could buy several at a time if they were cheap..... I am picturing Oliver's happiness at a whole (or half) of an intact fowl....
the game hens are great and perfectly sized. the dogs love them. if i could get a cheap source....they are perfect.
rabbits are a good size too if you can get them cheap (as a treat i just got them, paid about $8/rabbit....holy cow!)
(actually, i did possibly the stupidest thing i've ever done with a dog w/a game hen....let's just say i don't have food aggression issues w/luc. and i still need to buy a meat cleaver)

I get mine from Walmart at about $1 - $2 each and on occasion I can order a case of 10 or 20 from my butcher at a reasonable rate. For those of you who want rabbits find your local commercial rabbit breeder. It make take some searching but there are lots of them.
A few years ago the going rate on whole live rabbits at 5lbs was $5 - $7. I don't think you can get much cheaper than that for rabbit. The cost of feed is simply too high.
wow, i got them from my supermarket and i got ripped off! (i kind of figured that mind you, but still, ouch).
when i move (next weekend!) i'm going to get a deep freezer so i can buy more meat than what'll fit in the fridge, and then i really have to start looking into bulk stuff.
I too an looking for a cheaper source for game hens, they are perfect for my terriors. recently I paid about 6.00 for two of them, I'd like them cheaper. Reading the posts, great suggestions, I will give it a try. Most places I go say they order everything as is and don't have extra necks or backs. So, we'll see how the cornish game hens go in my area.
