IIRC, for handler aggressive dogs Cesar does use the choke-out, roll-over method. Have you seen the episode with Jonbee the Jindo? I don't recall him choking Jonbee out, but he did get him tired and rolled him, then taught the owner how to roll him.
There was another episode with a Malamute that got so worked up over other dogs that he would redirect onto the handler. I do believe he got hauled up into the air until he calmed down. Cesar even mentioned that "it looks horrible" (the choking), but it's what had to be done.
There was some clever editing in the episode with Emily the pit bull, who was also extremely dog aggressive. She most certainly did get choked to the point of passing out, but it was edited so that you could see Cesar start to pull up on the leash, then suddenly it flashed to where she was on the ground recovering =P

I think a lot of the editing is good for several reasons.
First of all, a lot of the fan base would be lost if they saw the way the "extreme" cases were handled, or they would just write CM off as too harsh, thus losing the teaching value. When I am talking with some of my clients (who LOVE CM) about dealing with some of their aggressive dogs, I am able to point out certain episodes, now that they have seen the end result and the positive changes, and show them why being firmer with their dog is necessary to address the issues. It's a bit of an ice breaker when before the CM show I would just have to deal with the dogs at my home kennel (no longer possible) and bring the dog back after we had addressed certain behaviors.
the other reason I like it is because it prevents yahoos who think they understand how to do it, what to do, etc from doing this.
Just like the "alpha roll" phase. Everyone thought they knew how to do it correctly, and many wondered why they were getting bit...

Yes Jennifer and Cameron I agree 100%.
Cesar makes it look so easy. Even though it says right on the screen "don't try this at home" and Cesar even repeats it, it's easy to think "hey, I can do that"
You have to remember that he's a professional who's been doing it for years.
(When I tried it with my dogs, I fully expected the method not to work as I had no experience, no practise, no guidance, and wasn't even sure what "method" to use in what situation. Just to clarify, I knew I didn't know what I was doing).
Ed's Pack Structure DVD is more of a How To while Cesar's show is more entertainment oriented. Ed shows owners HOW to build the pack structure in an easy step-by-step way, while Cesar just shows how HE applies it.
Ashley, why is Petco disreputable? Do they sell dogs? I know they have adoption events for local rescues, which PetSmart and Super Pet don't (although my local one does use its cage space for humane society cats). There is no petco in Canada so I really don't know?

I like the fact that the show serves as a "shock value" for owners in denial. I have gotten many calls that go something like, "We have _______ year/month old dog, and it seems to have always been grumpy, so we have just left it alone when it does ________ then we saw the CM show, and there was a dog just like this and CM says it's a serious problem that will only get worse. We thought maybe he/she would grow out of it, but we don't want this to get worse so we called you"
Sometimes people need a wake up call to face the facts that they have a spoiled dog. Seeing someone else make the mistake removes emotion out of the acceptance they need to do, and sometimes helps the dog to get the help it needs before it gets to the point that it is put down.

Petco does sell dogs, at least in my area. Not to mention their (likely) well-intentioned, but mostly useless in-store obedience classes... Add to that the recent FDA incident at one of their major distributing warehouses, and well, they earn a failing grade in my book.
I prefer to shop with smaller, "mom & pop" stores, that specialize in what they do. I purchase all my food, supplements, etc from a local store where I know the owner and the owners DOGS, and the owner knows me, and my dog- and has known the past two dogs I've owned as well. I know he's not out to rip me off.
With PETCO, they're in it to make a buck, and they don't care about selling puppy-mill dogs, or food that makes your pet sick.

Alyssa, are you sure they are selling dogs and not just letting a rescue or something adopt them out?

That was my thought as well. We have two nearby, and both have Humane Society dogs and cats for adoption. They also have larger “showing” of even more shelter dogs on the weekends.
I do agree about the training programs though, it is horrible. However, I would rather people train there than not at all…
Maybe it's a Cali thing...

This came up a while back and Petco Corporate replied that they do not and never did sell dogs in any Petco, but that they do hold adoption events for local shelters/SPCA/etc.
If this is untrue, I would appreciate info to the contrary.
