I'm not Debbie, but I'm not sure how often she will be coming here now that I have Evander back.
It was not their first dog, they had one several years ago that died.
She prepared herself for this puppy, paid big bucks for a trainer and started with him the day she brought Evander home, bought everything she needed, set up the house just right...everything.
They just weren't prepared for the little alligator part...and they felt it was more then puppy play. I don't see him as any more mouthy then the rest of the puppies were, or then Delilah is. He is just being a puppy and I think he saw Debbie as his most fun toy to chomp on. Also, their daughter, who hasn't been around dogs at all, was very scared of him. That alone can be stressful.
GSD's aren't for everyone...no matter how much you prepare for one. This just wasn't a good match...not the right breed for them. No one should have a puppy that they are afraid of.
Thats what I meant Karla, since their daughter was born. I was thinking other breeds and maybe not a puppy. We have an English Setter that we got at 7 and she is the perfect match with kids.(we have 3)Something along those lines to help her daughter to not be afraid and not be so much work.

GSDs are natural herding dogs. It's not uncommon for herders to nip at the heels of people, other dogs, sheep, etc. as part of their normal drives. Compound that with teething, insufficient exercise (appears that this pup never has the chance to RUN, jump, scoot around) and you have one very high-energy pup who is looking to burn off some steam. I would not keep the dog tethered to me when he's in the house. The constant tethering, crating, leashing while walking (human walks never equate to something that will tire out a puppy or a dog)could be the problem here. He needs a little bit of freedom so that he can burn off some normal puppy energy. He also should have the ability to run around a fenced yard and play like a puppy. Looks like the dog is exhibiting fairly normal puppy behavior.

Bravo Karla. Hopefully you can find a home with people that understand the breed and puppies in general better than his current home situation. Some folks would be better suited for a lapdog or maybe a Golden Retriever than a GSD puppy. Some GSD pups can be a handful, but when they're raised properly there are no better dogs.

I would not keep the dog tethered to me when he's in the house. The constant tethering, crating, leashing while walking (human walks never equate to something that will tire out a puppy or a dog)could be the problem here.
So it is okay for a puppy to run a muck in the house, get into things which have to be corrected rather than keeping the pup tethered and being able to work with him and reward for the good behavior instead of correcting for unwanted behavior?
Doing several short (5 minutes maybe) sessions of focus work or obedience work tires a pup out good, along with walks.
Allowing a pup to run and jump to a degree is fine, but too much of it is not good while they are growing. I have to stop my pup from doing things, she will climb or try to jump on anything now.
