That was my concern on a Pit as well, and a Boxer lol. I will tell you this though, when I went to see the litter where I got my pup, the male (Reverse brindle and cropepd) was roaming the front yard and was pretty intimidating. I was not going in there alone. Once I went in, he was friendly and a big goof ball.
I think that heat you have may be too much for a lot of short muzzled dogs.
I think the Chesapeake and Rotty make a good choice. I also like the Poodle, but I just don't see people showing them the respect like other dogs. Why have someone test your dog, if looks alone will keep most people away?
I know I am chiming in late. But have you thought of a rescued, older great dane? They can be pussy cats and their looks do enough to keep most people away.
