Heh, you're posting so fast. I'm like one post behind. :P
He goes to sleep in his crate at around 10pm. I usually get to bed around midnight. Would it be a good idea to take him out for a walk at midnight, to take advantage of the fact that he's dizzy/relaxed, and the streets are more calm ?

Hehe scratch what I said, I'm about 4posts behind now.
How can he do this if you are marching along briskly and then stopping for breaks when he is "allowed" to do this?
I was questionning wether I should tolerate him marking his territory at all.

At home? Off lead in his yard?

Actually, could you go over the general rules ?
At home, he has his "toilet" consisting of a 3ft square of peebles. This is the only place I allow him to do his business.
I have him pee before walks to make sure he doesn't need to relief himself on the go. The only reason he does pee (if I give him a chance) is to mark.

If I have given free ("okay") time, then marking and peeing (and sniffing and pooping; I never leave home without poop bags) are what I pretty much expect them to do.

I'm 100% pack-leader pack-structure oriented.
OTOH, it sounds like maybe you've taken that so much to heart that the dog is maybe a little anxious and maybe a little resentful of some of those "corrections" recommended by that "trainer."
I'd try to lighten up a little and enjoy the dog, enjoy the obedience sessions, rely more on calm brisk walking and less distracting times of day than on corrections for keeping control on walks ....
I'd work on building a bond for now. That doesn't mean relinquishing leader position.

Thank you.
Sorry if my question seemed stupid... But while I'm sure he enjoys the fact that I'm less of a drill sarge, I wouldn't want him to think that I'm "softening" and think that he got an opportunity to challenge me.
This was more of a behavior interrogation. I.e. if pack leaders allow members to mark their territory in their presence; if there's a difference between that and letting him do his business when he has to.
I hope he enjoys this new aspect of our walks!
Edit: dammit you posted before me again!

Not at all stupid - it's a good question, and one that a lot of people don't think to mention! Depending on the dog, temperment, problems the owner is having, etc, that is a very important thing to stop - he goes to the bathroom before walks, in a certain spot, but isn't allowed to "claim" the whole neighborhood.
I stop halfway through walks and give the "ok" for them to have loose leash time in a large area without houses and dogs, and they can mark and sniff to their little hearts' content. I don't, however allow them to mark and pee the way there and the way back. I do this in addition to letting them go before we leave.

Hmmm.
Well, claiming the neighborhood probably isn't good with a territorial dog.
But as for the factor of allowing the dog to mark in the handler's presence, I'd say that "allowing" dials back any threat to pack structure. That is, if you are in charge of the "free" venues, and you don't just say "OK" when you see that he really really wants to mark *that tree*, then it seems all right to me.
Interesting.

That concern is one of the reasons I don't walk my dog in our neighborhood.
I don't want her to consider anything outside of our fence, as hers. Not so much because I worry about her being territorial, but because I worry about her taking off if she ever had the opportunity (gate left open, etc).
Two or three times a week, my husband drives up and meets me on the military installation I work at, and we take the pup walking in the woods. She's never been beyond our driveway, unless she was in a car.
BUT that's just my paranoia, more than anything.
