Yeah, unfortunately that was during a trial. He was just bored. He is a stubborn dog that will hold a down at a dog park while others are running, fetching, tumbling over him and trying to get him to play. BUT, when it mattered, he wanted to goof off.
We will never live it down, and I can still the comments from others, “That’s why we don’t work Rotts” “Working a Rott is a waste of time” “That’s a Rott for you; you can never count on them to perform.” Luckily our training director chose the Rott as his breed of choice and is always very encouraging. No one could ask for a more knowledgeable and experienced helper/training director when it comes to Rotts and Schnauzers.
We are always glad to have new people show up with an open mind to what their dog can accomplish, both here and at our club.
Jessica, I don't know anything about training a dog but I'm sure that these ppl that were saying these things have probably had the samething to happen to them. So your dog felt comfortable and secure enough to take a little roll in the grass doesn't mean he's stubborn or "untrainable" BAH on that.
I use to show horses and I had one to lay down and roll in a halter class. He was bored, I was bored to and tired of standing there to.
Your dog might have been bored, maybe his back itched doesn't mean a thing. You passed that's what's important not what people had to say so don't let them bring you down.
Its good that all of us have a preference in breeds, but I don't think anyone has the right to put another person's dog down, they don't know you and they don't know YOUR dog.Its the relationship that we have with our dogs that is important.
My Grandfather had a saying,"You can't fight ignorance, you can only rise above it". Just keep on rising above it Jessica you and your dog are doing great,so keep proving those morons wrong.
Nah... Schutzhund as a sport is dominated by GSDs (and lately, Mals). "Off" breeds like Rotties and Dobes get a lot of flack, but it's all good natured at it's heart.
Kind of like rivalries between the different branches of the military.
Any time I see a Rott with it's butt actually ON the ground in a sit, I chuckle. Apparently no one told him he was a Rottie.
It was an AQHA show.Luckily not a big one.
I know your Rott has to perform correctly and he will !!! It never ceases to amaze me how perfect an animal can do everything at home, and maybe a few shows and then be such a goof at the next event. My Rotts are doing great FOR NOW but I can just imagine how they are going to be when we go for the CGC certificates. I'll be the one that goofs up though since I'm used to having my horses on my right and the dogs are supposed to be on the left. It doesn't matter in CGC but I want to get it right the first time if I decide to go on for obediance titles
I get the same types of remarks from the TB people when I jump my Arab, and the QH people when I run a reining pattern or cut on the same "Ay-rab" (spit out of the side of the mouth) .
Like Alyssa said, it is like the rivalries between the branches of the military. I have a sister in the Air Force and a brother in the Marines. You should hear some of the friendly ribbing!
LOTS of practice and faith in your animal (dog or horse) will eventually win the day!
I think training and showing animals should be fun for both human and animal.Last yr I had the opportnity to go to an AKC show. The novice class taught me more than the more experienced handlers in that the handlers who were relaxed and didn't sweat the goofs did better than those that were uptight or expected too much of their dogs.
My vet insists on waiting to spay a female until after her first heat cycle and suggests neutering a male around 6mos due to their marking and to decrease the risk of prostate cancer.I think vets are like doctors everyone has a different opinion.
