As an update: my training session with my young male last night and tonight went very well with NO backing up. We worked on sit and down (things I taught him before the back up) last night and tonight at sitting in heel position. I worked in a tiny room where there was no room to back up and used my marker word rather than the clicker. So far, so good! Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I'll try to phase the clicker back in when he is solid on more behaviours.
Debbie, you can try reteaching it with the same command, if you think your dog's temperment can handle attempt after attempt of what he *thinks* is the right behavior, only to be met with a negative marker and no reward.
If the dog discourages or frustrates easily, it's much better to simply create a new command and behavior.
I am going to try using the same command....her enthusiasm is part of the problem. Think I might try the corner trick with this and see how it works. Or maybe standing on the leash.
Have been out of town for the last week so just doing a little brainstorming before we train this afternoon.
I have used place boards for a lot of these issues mentioned here plus some addition benefits.
Helps the dog contain himself, helps on exact position, helps with duration, makes reward more fulfilling, etc.
Hope this helps!

Okay my dog is heeling and he is attentive then I will forget to reward him and he lets me know it....oh you mean the dogs quirks not me????
Sorry , I couldn't help it since I seem to be more quirky then my dog.

Ding ding ding!
I never thought of "place" boards for so many things, but I don't know why.
A whole little mental slide happened when you said that, and I realized that the mats I use to teach "place" are infinitely useful!
