I would like to refer any newcomer to the videos and books sold by Ed. If you read a Koehler book on obedience you'll see a major difference in the way training is done today. I learned these techniques when I first started training so it's no surprise to me now why I ruined a couple of good dogs. Purely positive is a book for a good start. The video on Training the Competitive Heeling Dog also shows some excellent techniques which limit a lot of unnecessary corrections. Do your dog a favor and purchase some of these books and tapes.
He who has never tasted soap has never bathed a dog
Here here bosederhund. Ed works hard to help all of us so let's support him when we can.
Joy:
Very good response. My thoughts exactly.
Yo see I can train for a one day event every day for a year. If my dog has a bad day all that was a waste. He has to live and die for his work. He can't sit home and be petted all day. He gets praised for one thing and one thing only for working. He knows that. So he works like crazy to please me. He sits all day in the kennel and when I get home to take him out he practacly runs me over. His frustration all day now brings him into drive. Drive-Compulsion-Drive. I have those words written accross my bedroom. I live and die by them. Now that does not mean I do not socialize him and bond with him. But they are on MY TERMS and structured. I can explain that in another post if anyone is interested.
