Hey, thanks for thinking about us. He's doing better each day. Red blood cell counts are now in the normal range, and he's eating much better. Another week and he'll get all the staples out of his abdomen.
Funny thing about the eating. I figured I'd baby him with the usual "bland diet" for a few days...which I tried. But Luca wanted nothing to do with boiled rice. I tried it with boiled chicken, boiled hamburger, egg. Turned up his nose. He wanted raw meat, dammit! I finally relented and gave him some chicken breast meat (seems pretty bland to me!) and this morning he had some beef heart. I'm holding off on feeding any bones for a few more days, out of an abundance of caution. In fact, our holistic vet is suggesting that she would prefer that he only get ground RMBs from now on--just to make digestion as uncomplicated as possible for him. Our vet is a big supporter of raw feeding, but I think in Luca's case she wants to err on the safe side.
Good excuse as any for ordering that big 1.5 hp grinder I've had my eye on anyway...

Thank you all for your interest in Luca. It warms the cockles of my heart to know that there are people out there who really care about how he's doing. As "dog people" I know you get it...and so many of the non-dog-people in encounter in my "real" life don't. So, many thanks, truly.
I just got back from a quick trip to the vet's with Luca. There was a swelling about the size of my thumb along the surgical wound that I hadn't noticed before...so I wanted to get it checked out, to make sure it wasn't a hernia or anything.
Turned out to just be a pocket of clear fluid under the skin, left from all the edema around the incision. They drained it and said it was nothing, and that Luca looked great. He's got lots of energy, eating well, pooping more-or-less normally. No temp, color of gums is good. He's no longer on any pain meds, and doesn't seem to need it. A few more days on antibiotics to complete the course, but that's it. He gets the staples removed this weekend. And then, finally, I think this will be behind us. He will have forgotten about it long before I will!
I've ordered a grinder to grind his RMBs, so currently he's only getting muscle meat, eggs with shells, yogurt and veggies. I'm confident that once he gets some bone back into his diet, his poops will be perfect again. If the grinder doesn't come soon, I'll probably buy him some pre-ground Bravo food, or ask if the butcher will grind some whole chickens for me.
So good to hear that Luca is continuing to heal and get back to his healthy self!
It is a great success story, and your quick response really made all the difference Tracy!
Continued well wishes to Luca!
Congratulations on his recovery!
