Check out the "pack structure for the family pet" DVD, and watch the free intro. Ed states "most people have no idea how strong the pack drive is in their family dog". You have already seen it! http://leerburg.com/308.htm (watch the video clip that is on that page)
Crate and rotate isn't the end of the world. To PB owners with multiple dogs it's almost a mantra. Dogs are like people. Sometimes two just don't get along with each other. I agree that behaviorist is well, not right. DA isn't a reason to euth a dog.
A lot of people get into trouble using CM's techniques. That's why they have a disclaimer on the show saying, "Don't try this at home". A TV program has a limited amount of air time and they tend to edit a show for dramatic effect rather than useful information. Ed's videos however are aimed at proper training not an audience of people who may not even have or want a dog.
Look on the bright side however. Being a vet this will give you invaluable experience that you can pass on to people who need the same advice you have been getting here.
Carol, I'd just like to encourage you to keep up the good work. Making changes in how you live with dogs is hard. Admitting your mistakes and working to correct them is commendable. Yes, we all love our dogs and want what's best for them. Yes, this site and forum can be hard on people who make mistakes with dogs. I wish it wasn't so even though I understand the frustration with the frequency we see misinformation and bad situations.
We all have these ideas of what we want from our dogs. Sometimes they're good ideas and sometimes not. Cesar's book, Being the Pack Leader, is excellent on the psychology of pet ownership; evaluating your own self and what you are projecting onto your dogs and what your dogs are capable of. There's a lot of poo-pooing CM around here because of his TV show; but there's good stuff in his book(s).
I'd also like to put in a plug for marker training on this thread. Ed has an excellent podcast that's like 30 minutes that's very similar to his free ebook on marker training. In addition, I'm really enjoying Pat Miller's The Power of Positive Dog Training. Even while doing groundwork and establishing pack structure, I think marker training is also a good way to establish leadership. It gets the dog focused on you and in a mindset of trying to figure you out. Maybe others would recommend waiting until you've done the groundwork and established pack structure to start. I've found that marker training with my second dog has accelerated our bonding and her accepting my leadership.
thank you so much everyone...I spent alot of time the past week reviewing all the options as far as books and DVD's from this site, and I just placed an order...
I got all DVD's instead of books, cause my husband is not inclined to sit and read. I got the 3 pack with basic obedience, dominant dogs (of course) and pack structure, as well as the remote collar DVD, since we did purchase an ecollar and I want to learn how to use it correctly if I am going to press the button at all (which I have not done yet, as having Cliff just wear the collar seems to subdue him enough for me to keep him calm. most of the time).
I had ordered so many books from the trainer I had used, plus CM and Jean Donaldson and Pat McDonnell..so I will wait on the great books that are offered till I get finished with all the others.
this site is just wonderful, and I am so very appreciate of the words of advice from all of you. thank you and I will continue to keep you posted as I learn how to be a proper pack leader.
