My take?
It'd be kinda like me running my car into a tree, and then b*tching that it doesn't corner right anymore.
Well no Sh*t Sherlock, you screwed it all up!
I have no issue with someone finding a more suitable home for a dog. But that doesn't make me feel better about the fact that they caused the problems in the first place.

Well, if they got the dog when it was a year old, then it probably came with a lot of issues, plus bad genes, then yes, most people screw it up even more. The sad thing is most people have great intentions and there are a lot of "professionals" out there telling them they can cuddle their dog out of their problems. Or give them enough cookies to melt away all the issues. At least those people are trying. It's the people who throw their dogs in the backyard and just ignore them that really kill me!

a final update...
not sure if anyone is still following this or not, but on tuesday evening i was at home alone and feeding my dogs dinner, we have a very typical routine for this as they must sit and wait to be calm for food. after they started eating i went outside for a minute and came back in to find my chessie literally trying to kill my pitt. my whole kitchen and living area covered in blood and fur...i tried to break them up verbally but there they were very much in what cesar refers to as the 'red zone'. i was very much scared to just be in the house, and so i retreated outside. this went on for 10-15 minutes before the pitt submitted. they have had their tiffs on occasion but NEVER like this... this was a whole new level than i had ever witnessed between 2 dogs that get along 99% of the time.
the disappointing part is we were having a really good day...we had spent lots of time working together and retreiving...
after a stop at the vet to assess the damage, my chessie is now with the breeder so she can evaluate the re-homing situation. i feel very confident with the choice we have made, albeit a difficult one.

You didn't break up the fight? You left the house and let them fight, left the chessie ATTACKING the pit?

I don't mean this rudely but you shouldn't own ANY dog. I can't think of anything else to say that doesn't have swearing in it. #$$@^@#$%@$%@#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well, i might have meant it rudely. I still don't even know what to say that wouldn't be censored.

Un-frigging-believable.
I hope you understand what you've done and accomplished over the years Rebecca.
This, after telling us how much you've realized you'd failed the dog! You failed him yet again!
Never, ever never get another dog!!!!!!

So, you saw YOUR DOG 'literally trying to kill' YOUR OTHER DOG and you LEFT? You a)left your own dog to be attacked; and b)let your own (other) dog attack another dog (your own, at that).

Rebecca,
I think you should consider rehoming the Pitt as well. For whatever reason, I don't think you get it, and I am concerned for your baby. Leaving them alone together when they were eating was careless (being kind). Not doing something when the fight errupted was, IMO, criminal.
I understand not putting yourself in between them but if your first instinct was to hide; I think there is something missing in your bond with both dogs. That combined with your repeated poor judgement leaves me to believe your child's safety is at risk from any dog you own.
I agree with Randy!

I stand corrected.
It's like slamming your car into a tree, then throwing it in reverse and slamming into another tree at 100 mph.

If I can add onto what Sheila was saying, you still own a powerful dog (the pit is still alive and in your care, right?). AND YOU do not have ANY BUSINESS owning a powerful dog. NONE.
Not to mention that the however good tempered the pit was before the attack, I'd say it's now at pretty high-risk for fear/dog aggression, and I think you've proven you can't handle a dog with behavioural problems, PARTICULARLY aggression issues.
