Not to be all 'running is the best thing ever!' but with her reactivity to other dogs - Teagan is FAR less reactive when we're running. She's in drive, and her focus is on that, rather than the other dogs. It's not that hard to redirect her back to the run.
Jennifer - running. yes, true. i guess i better get in shape right lol. i guess it's another good reason to quit smoking
connie - not really. there are small enclosed fenced in lots around, but people take their dogs in there too! there is one right next to my building too, but it's become basically a small dog park

But you guys can get in shape together
I'm always happy to make up a training schedule (doing run/walk for people new to it) for anyone who wants....
(and I promise to stop being a nerd....NOW!)

Of course, I am not trying to answer for Jennifer, but one of my dogs just read that over my shoulder and fainted.
Connie, you are so funny! I was reading this thread and when I got to Mike's description of how much he exercises his dog every day, I had a picture in my mind of Kasey passed out cold in the middle of the sidewalk! He loves to go for a walk, but after about 40 minutes of fast walking, he's like a trail horse headed back to the stable!
Mike, if my dog needed that much exercise, I'd be in serious trouble! Hats off to you for giving him THAT much!
Jennifer M., I trust your opinion of Luc, but can't help think you aren't giving yourself as much credit as you deserve for being a good pack leader/boss 'O the family. Whatever you want to call it.
If you saw him, you'd know....he's a big lazy goof. He likes to play high-speed tag in the yard, but that's about it.
Edit: you just made me think. He may also be so couch-potato-ish b/c he was 3 years in a shelter from a puppy. Maybe it's learnt behaviour. Dunno.
What I can't wait for is to build the little midget up so he can come on long runs with us!
I had a friend tell me "there are only a few breeds of dogs that running is actually good for them. it really places too much stress on their hearts." This seems like something totally made up to me. While researching this, I found a couple studies on humans that said 5 or more walks a week at 30 - 40 minutes adds about 3 years to your life. Running about that much can add 5 - 7 years to your life expectancy. Does anyone know if there have been any studies on dogs' life expectancy as jogging companions? It seems to me that if you treat them similar to your self and start slow and build up it could only be good for them.
Obviously, not all breeds can be runners. My Shi Tzu gets pretty tuckered out after just a mile walk. But it seems that if you know your dog's limits it can only be good for them.

Sounds totally made up to me too.
In particular, I would ask this friend about dogs bred for working or hunting: that would encompass many many breeds (not "a few").
