That's one thing I like about feeding 1/2 The Honest Kitchen and 1/2 RMB. I'm basically giving her about 1 - 2 cups of heavily baited water with every meal. When I feed her, she laps up THK first then goes for the RMB.

We don't have humidity or even high heat (except maybe a few hot days a year, but still not humid), so I can add that even if you have summer weather like here (65 to 75 degrees days, 60 nights, no high humidity, and ocean breezes), do not think that your dog needs no vigilance.
Folks in our club are so careful about hydration that it made me start the water-on-raw routine, and I was so happy to see that even my least brilliant dog formed the water habit from it.
Think of how much more this does, too: It helps to keep urine pale and it flushes the kidneys beneficially. It minimizes crystal and stone formation, and helps to prevent constipation, too.
Good thread, from a terrible and frightening event.

.... If you don't have a dog that tends to drink a good amount of water to keep hydrated, baiting the water is a good idea. Also keeping the outside water bowl cool or freequently refreshing so it is more inviting helps. When my dogs are out in the yard on warm days I am constantly changing the water for fresh & cooler water for them. ....
Great suggestions, Anne.

She's tidying up the RMBs. LOL!
I had a dog once who picked off the produce and laid it on the floor, then ate the RMBs and meat, turning back to the stupid produce only when the bowl was licked clean.

Alyssa,
Thank goodness Danke (and you) are OK.
When I heard you thought it was bloat, my heart sank (I remember Danke had an vomit episode a few months back that had you worried). How absolutely terrifying and heart-wrenching that must have been I optimistically told myself Danke was too young to bloat.
Anyways, a big YIPPPEEE!! I'm so relieved for you guys

I'm feeding Falcon in the garage - simply putting his dinner on the concrete. I have noticed he is drinking far less water since starting to eat raw... Pouring water on the floor doesn't seem like a great idea, am I missing how this is being done?
I give Danke her food in a steel bowl- granted, she usually pulls everything out, re-sorts it and eats it, but it arrived in a bowl.
Last night I put her meal in her bowl (it's a pretty large bowl, BTW) and poured two cups of water over the top, and gave it to her in her crate per usual.
She pulled everything out of the bowl, drank the water, and then sorted and consumed her dinner.
Between the salmon oil, blood and miscellanous raw fluids, she sucked the water down quicker'n me and Randy in the wine cellar.
In coming back and re-reading this, I see how stupid it sounded!! I've read so many posts about folks just feeding their dogs on a tarp, in the crate, on the floor, etc... a BOWL just seemed too logical!!! LOL! Oh well, it won't be the last time I sound like an idiot - at least I'm dependable.
Loved the "sucking down the wine" comment.

You guys are awesome!
I have already begun pouring 2 cups of water over her food (she is raw fed- I wouldn't recommend doing this with kibble)
So glad to hear your Danke is doing okay and recovering!
I was wondering if you could expand on this a little more. Are you saying it's not okay to soak kibble, or just not to put that much water in with kibble? I've always soaked my GSDs kibble 5-10 minutes before feeding her (just enough to wet the kibble) because she inhales her food. I've read pros and cons on this forum about soaking kibble, but have never found a definitive answer as to whether this is a bad thing to do or not.

I worry about adding water to kibble because of the potential bacteria issues.
I would imagine if the dog is fed the moistened kibble within 15 minutes, there is no harm.
Beyond that, I would be concerned about the dramatic increase in bacteria (you've basically provided a perfect petri dish). Given that kibble-fed dogs also digest food differently (it tends to spend more time in the gut, or so we believe- we've never actually SEEN a study) I would be even more concerned about that bacteria.
Than again, it may be completely unfounded.
If you haven't had issues with it, I really wouldn't worry about it.
I think the bigger concern is soaking kibble in the morning, and then letting it sit in the dish all day for free-feeding.
You aren't doing that, so I don't think you have any cause for concern.

I seem to remember reading that adding water to kibble is suspected to add to the risk of bloating. But I cannot for the life of me remember where.
When we are spending a lot of time outside with the dogs at home I sometimes freeze baited water into old butter tubs and then give it to them to lick and play with. They seem to love it and I feel like maybe it helps keep them cooler and gives some extra hydration.
