Why should you meet a good Trainer before?
-Because you need to see how they are as a person, how they run their classes, what kind of people/dogs are in their classes, and what achievements students have reached with that trainer. Also, shopping around is always the best practice.
Guns?
-Most Canadians don't see guns as the answer. Also, gun laws are more strict in Canada. If my dog bites an intruder, WORST case I have to put the dog down. If I shoot an intruder I will most likely go to Jail. And Yes I agree - That Sucks, but I think it helps to keep the murder rate down.
The point is - FOLLOW THROUGH, and FOLLOW UP. Don't let us down Walter. If you follow through with getting this dog then do what you have told us you want to do. Understand and be ready for the commitment you have made to you, your family, and most importantly the dog. GSD's live for an average 10* years (*fact not based on actual statistics).
The dog didn't ask for you, you asked for the dog.

No. not your goal for him. How do you expect him to act and behave when you bring him home?
Honestly, I really don't know how to anwer your question here, cause like I said before, choosing the right match is totally base on a communications between the buyer and breeder, if you really want me to anwser you and the truth is I will expected my puppy that choosen by my breeder is going to be a perfect matched.

Walter,
Even the 'best' right match takes work.
If my dog isn't learning, I'm doing something wrong.

I'm not trying to trick you or anything Walter. Are you expecting this puppy to be calm and gentle or a 100 mile an hour nipping demon? Do you have a plan for introducing him to your kids? What if he barks at them like a maniac? Scares them and your wife.
General things to be prepared for.

eta because I'm not quick enough on the keyboard.
It's not rocket science, but it is dedication and work because one must MAKE time for the dog. Not this or that relax time, but just for the dog.
One must like dogs. No, love dogs as well as love working with them. Everything else is kinda fit into that world.
Ask the question here on the forum; 'how many people have rearranged their life style around the dogs or have always had dogs in their life, thus life has always been rather centered around the dog/s as such.
You may be surprised.
For my part, the day is 99% of the time arranged around their (the dogs) wants and needs.

Make sure you have a crate. Keep it where he can observe the whole family, like a family room or something. The first week he may very well be a perfect angel while he takes in his new surroundings.
Don't let him chase the kids, keep him on a line and don't let it get started. In my opinion, most of the work will be with your kids. Making them realize that a lot of what they want to do can be seen as teasing by a puppy. Simple things like pulling their hands away when they pet him can bring out his prey drive.
Have you looked at any of the other threads here from people with kids and dogs? Most of the questions you may have, I'm sure have been covered. There are articles here you can read also.
When I read the description of the sire and what they expect him to produce, be prepared for what could be a little nervous, suspicious pup that needs a lot of management to grow into what you want. But he is a pup, and everything I'm saying could be completely wrong. LOl. Thats why a good trainer will be helpful to you not only with general training but evaluating his temperament and how he is with your family.
