Update: Just had a visit from the Dog Rescue Coordinator, a physician in general practice (she's retiring in two weeks so she can spend 100% of her time with the rescue org).
She examined Buckley and feels he has the canine version of eczema. She advocates fish oil, kefir, no steroids, removal of the straw, and the wearing of a coat to prevent B from scratching. Also, a cortisone cream lathered on whenever B can stand it.
I'll also migrate him from Science Diet to Orijen, which he's already demonstrated he doesn't like (it's left at the bottom of his dish).
Also if someone could verify this for me - I believe you should be giving Vitamin E with the fish oil - maybe someone could explain why - I think it helps their body process the fish oil? - I didnt see in Bevs updated post above anything about Vit E that the vet recommends, just fish oil-
Poor pup hope he turns around for the better soon!

Did she say "lathered" on? I have been dealing with allergy dogs for a long time and no vet has ever said to lather it on. In fact, it's just the opposite when you use cortisone creams - even on humans. You just want a thin film of it on the skin - too much thins the skin and makes it easy for the dog to ingest it. My derma vet gives us a spray liquid cortisone so that it penetrates into the skin quickly and there's not much for them to lick off. I would still recommend a trip to the derma vet to comfirm eczema and treatment. JMO!
I'm still looking for a derma vet in the city where I live. They'
I have an appt with a different vet to get a 2nd opinion. I'll ask for the spray liquid.
