I don't know GSD pedigrees very well at all, but one thing I would say is all those titles on both of them, Sch,show, ring, these don't look like dogs that are just thrown together to me.
So it seems I need to make a choice... My wife is very interested in us getting the Good Citizen award and the therapy certification so that we can visit people who need it. I am more interested in the Shutzhund work.. So am I to take it I should pick one or the other? Or could I buy say a show line and just know that my dog my never be a champion in Shutzhund, but will be able to do the work?
Hey Betty... I forgot to reply to this.. But I have made a bulleted list from the responses you gave me and have started to ask the breeders these questions.. Thanks for all of your great insight.
Hey Betty.. I was looking at your website too.. FL is long drive for me, and what is appealing to me about a local breeder is the chance for them to help me do some Shutzhund training too. but if I can't find another breeder that is close to me and has a high quality pup, I would love to be put on your waiting list... You have been so much help!

There is a chance that ANY dog you get may never be a champion in Schutzhund..Show line's still do Schutzhund! As for therapy dog, many certification programs will not certify you if a dog has had any bite training.

Getting a dog that can do therapy AND schutzhund is not impossible but would be very difficult especially for some one that has not trained a dog in either venue before. In a litter I would select totally different dogs for the two purposes.
And a lot of therapy organizations will not allow a dog to be certified that has bite work training.
I think what I would do in your shoes is to try and decide which one I really want to do and pick a dog for that venue. Then *if* the dog was able to do both consider a bonus.
Schutzhund is a huge commitment. If you considering doing the sport at all I would try and get to some clubs and watch and see what all it entails.
Feel free to contact me at any time and ask any questions. I love giving advice!!! ROFL
So I have a silly question then.. I am most interested in the tracking part.. I really had a lot of fun with my last GSD setting up tracking courses. So if I wanted to do Therapy work and tracking.. does that sounds more reasonable? I don't mean to seem ignorant. I just want to lay out the best course for when I buy our new pup..
Yep, in talking to my wife I think we would be very happy.. I would love to get into a dog sport, and I think tracking would be fun... Now if a tracking dog would have a good temperament for therapy work too that would be awesome..
Side note: I have plans next Sunday to go watch a Shutzhund training session...
We are willing to work with our dog for about 2-4 hours M-F and more on the weekends. My last dog of 8 years we spent about 10 hours / week training (tricks mainly, but it was great fun).
