have only decided not to pursue protection training for at least 2 or 3 years and only after i have completed a number of courses with registered trainers, then review my abilities with independent advice re my skill level, dog suitabiltiy, time, money ...etc, etc.
if it doesn't seem like a good idea after all that then i will do something more suitable, already said have lived without a dog for 20+ years so am sure i can do it again if that makes the most sense, although you would think from the level of response that i have opted for lion taming or wrestling tiger sharks bare-handed in open water, relax a bit people, i aint scared of none of it. haven't been to schutzhund trial personally but have seen tapes of 50 year old women pulling higher titles, (no offence to 50 yo women) but hell i can do that.
anyhoo that has got to be responsible citizen/dog owner enough for any forum??
haven't made a decision on the breed yet to answer your question.

I'm not sure what age, or gender, has to do with training ability. Its not a skill that demands physical ability. People in wheelchairs have titled dogs.
And people in peak physical condition have been attacked by their own dogs, ruined dogs, had dogs completely shut down because the training was unfair, dogs that weren't suited to the work, had their dogs attack children, etc etc etc.
However, most of those 50 year old women have probably been training and titling dogs since their 20s.
And most of them started out with a moderately-drived GSD, to learn the ropes before they decided to jump head-long into the realm of super-drivey Mals and Dutchies.
Its called payin' your dues. You don't go straight to the top of the heap in anything. Especially dogs.
Trust me... your confidence will crumble, and all the reading you've done will go right out the window, once you've got yourself a real working dog.
Clubs wouldn't exist if you could learn this shit from a website.

we've used the analogy of shooting sports before, you start with a BB gun or 22 and demonstrate the basics before getting that larger calibre handgun or rifle

Honestly, I'll probably never get out of the BB gun stage of dog training

( I am referring to the 2 by 4 comments). you guys crack me up, but remember there may be some people who will take you seriously, so be careful what you say. I know they may be nuts, but think about the pups who are at the mercy of people who believe rough handling and abuse will get their dogs to obey them. My neighbor kicks her dogs if they bark at my dogs as they walk along the fence. She isn't alone, I have seen people be very cruel to their dogs.
Just a thought. You'd be amazed at what people really think they hear or read...so be careful.

Oh maaannn,
You mean he doesn't use a 2x4?
I thought maybe I was using one that was too short and was going to ask how long the lumber should be.
Never mind Dennis.

To the OP:
Please take into serious consideration the opinions of the very knowledgeable members that have replied to this thread. From my own experience in going from high energy, rambunctious pet dogs to a young working line GSD, I can tell you for sure that there is a world of difference between them.
.
Even having one of the softer dogs from a working line litter you are going to have a heck of a lot more dog on your hands than you might imagine. Never mind if you go for one of the harder pups.
No matter what you do, with your first one you willmake some mistakes. Its not a matter of if. Why would you want to knowingly put yourself in the position of handler aggression being the result?
I gotta go. my dog is barking at me again.

Lauren hi, i never intend to get into a situation of "handler aggresion" or any of the things suggested here. i was just awkwardly responding to others comments and it came out dumb sounding. in fact this thread has ended up non-informational so i'm off it.
cheers

Relax, enjoy yourself, learn. This IS an informational thread if not for you then for others, looking in. If someone or several someones provide suggestions, those who come after you, with similar situations, will have some info with which to begin a dialogue.
